Housing
Row Boils
Down Here
Auitln Hayden, administrator of
federal housing here. Mid today h
ni not backlnf down on nil pol
icial of handling the housinr units
and that he had never proposed
tearinr down any of the housing
units ao lone a they are needed.
Hayden said lie was under pres
sure from the hlRher-ups In the
federal housing service to terminate
unit here, but would not favor that
himself until It was clear the apart
ments or houses are excess or un
llvtble. Agreement Reached
His itatement was in answer to
allegations recently made that he
waa augKcsilng that 15 Mountain
View housing units, which are va
cant, be torn down. Yesterday Hay
den and Winston Purvinc. OVS di
rector, reached an agreement to let
Oregon Vocational school students,
rent those apartments.
Hayden also denied he had ever
shown any favoritism In renting
apartments or granted "special priv
ileges" to any tenants. He sr.id oc
casionally something slipped through
that wasn't exactly right, but he
had no control over such happen
ings. The Allied Veterans council earl
ier tills week claimed to know of
14 instances of "special privileges."
but the housing supervisor said he
had heard of only two and in both
cases the person complaining was
wrong.
Hayden also declared he was not
backing- down on his policy con
cerning allowing OVS students to
occupy federal apartments, that per
manent resident veterans would be
given first choice.
The now-famous cranberry in
dustry of Cape Cod dates from 1816,
when Henry Hall became the first
successful grower.
Ranch Home Burns
To Ground
TULELAKE. Jan, 29 The lour
room frame house on the ranch of

When the fire was discovered by

adjacent ranch about four miles
west of Tulelake at 4:30 p. m. it was
too late to check It.
Fire was thought to have started
from defective wiring, causing a
4000 loss. The completely furnished
house was covered by insurance.
