State Senator Howard C. Belton
of Canby. this wrelc annoimcfs his
' decision to become a candidate (or
the office of state treasurer. Belton
has served many years In the Ore
gon legislature and is now In his
third four-year term as state sena
tor.
By unanimous vote he was elected
president of the senate in 1945, In
which position he served as governor
of Oregon, during 1945 and 194S, on
many and some extended occasions
while Governor Sncll attended state
business in national conferences
outside the state. In this capacity,
he had opportunity to further in
crease his knowledge and experience
of various state institutions and
governmental functions.
GOP Dclriate
In 1944. Howarf Belton was elect
ed as a dclegate-at-large to the na
tional republican convention. Grad
uating from Oregon State college in
191 s, shortly thereafter he located In
Clackamas county on a farm. He has
developed extensive farming opera
tion and has resided in Clackamas
county continuously since 1917.
Mr. and Mrs. Belton have four
children. The two oldest boys had
loreign service during the recent
war: Arthur, a It. J.g. in naval avia.
won ordinance; George, a master
sergeant in the marine air corp in
the South Pacific. Margaret is a
registered nurse and John, the
youngest, is in Canby grade school.
Senator Belton says. "I am in
formed that the board of control
c -tucts extensive agricultural op
erations, because of Oregon's land
board functions and the actual op
eration of some 5000 acres that are
producing for state institutions pro
ducts valued at a million dollars or
more each year. I believe a good
practical farmer would have a con
tribution to make to the adminis
tration of matters handled by Ore
gon's board of control. My many
years of legislative experience, along
with my farming background. I be
lieve qualifies me to render a good
service to my state In the office of
state treasurer."

New Stratocruiser
Goes To Air Force
SEATTLE, Jan. 29 A new
version of the Boeing Stratocruiser
which company officials said can
carry a heavier load faster and
father than the older types will be
turned over to the air force as soon
as flight tests can be completed.
The ship, the YC-97A. made a
maiden flight of one hour and 13
minutes yesterday. Two others are
under construction and will be
placed in sen-ice by the air trans
port command when completed.
The improved ship, designated as
the YC97A, is 59 per cent more
powerful than the similar XC-97
which crossed the continent non
stop in 1945 at an average speed of
383 miles per hour. It can carry
more than 30 tons of cargo non-stop
3300 miles.

Criminal trials were booked al
most solidly through February and
March for circuit court as seven
persons Indicted In the past week
by the grand Jury yesterday after
noon entered pleas of not guilty to
the charges against them. None
pleaded guilty, although on young
prisoner tried It.
Earl Leslie Wallln Jr., 30. who
has been in the county Jail since
November 1 on a larceny In a
dwelling charge, pleaded not guilty
to the Indictment before Judge
David R. Vandenberg. When the
judge glanced down his crowded
calendar and mentioned a date late
in March for trial, Wallln spoke up:
"I'll plead guilty right now If It'll
speed things up."
But the not guilty plea was ac
cepted and Wallln's trial was moved !
up to the head of the list, February

Sanity Hearing
Homer Franklin. Indicted for first j
degree murder in the gunshot death 1
of his wife. Marie, pleaded not
guilty. His trial Is set for April 19
and there Is a defense move brew
ing for a sanity hearing.
James Wyatt, Indicted for second
degree murder, was formally ar- i
raigned and J. C. O'Neill appointed
to represent him. He is to make his
plea tomorrow at 10 a. m.

Plane Ended

planes cruised over 111 snowbound
mountain wilderness northwest of
Denver today seeking trace of a
C-47 government plana that disap
peared a week ago with three civil
aeronautics administration em
ployes aboard.
Ski patrols, dog teams and other i
ground searchers were withdrawn
last night from the area near Neder
land, Colo. Capt. William Coleman,
Lowry field public relations offi
cer, said officials had virtually
abandoned hope lor the missing
trio.
