AAA Plan
To Be Cut
In County

Agricultural practices carried out
In Klamnth county tills year 1 19481
under the AAA program will be
greatly reduced from previous
years. At a meeting of the county
committee Friday, the program was
streamlined to fit available funds
for 1948.
The 1948 program carries an ap
proprlatlon of $65,000 in Klamath
county for practice pnyments, as
compared with $205,000 available
In 1946 and also In 1947. Ill re
ducing the program to this basis
It was necessary for the committee
to exclude certain practices now
well established In the county and
to Include only those where addi
tional stress and education is
needed.
The following practices were in
cluded in the handbook to carry
full payment as listed in the state
handbook. Payments lor these
practices are to be made on a 100
per cent basis, before other prac
tices are to be considered.
Winter legumes for green manure
and cover crops.
Summer-grown green manure
crops.
Small grain green manure crops.
Red clover, alsike clover or sweet
clover greeu manure.
Deep subsoiling alkaline irrigated
cropland to a depth which will
effectively shatter the hard-pan.
Installation of tile, fibre pipe and
lumber box drain.
Seeding of permanent pastures
and grazing land, and re-seeding.
Weed control.
Application of mulching mate
rials. Local conservation practice.
Practices left in the handbook to
be paid for on a pro-rated basis of
all remaining funds were:
Lining permanent ditches and
irrigation reservoirs.
Installation of inverted siphons,
flumes, drop boxes or chutes, weirs,
pipes, and diversion gates.
Construction of dams for irriga
tion water.
Construction or enlargement of
drainage ditches.
Wells for range livestock.
Development of springs and seeps.
Construction of dams and reser
voirs. Installation of pipelines lor live
stock water.
Construction of new large water
storage at wells and springs for
stock water.
Clearing land for pasture.

ed by the county committee for
the mulching of alkali spots, pro
Tiding an application of 3 tons per
era of straw and 200 pounds of
sulphur. The straw application to
be paid for up to 3 tons per acre
and the rate of payment for legu
minous straw, $5 per ton, and for
non-leguminous at S3 per ton and
sulfur at 1 cent per pound. Prior
and final approval of county and
community committeemen required.
It la expected that the county
handbook will be completed and
ready for distribution early in
February.
Negro Woman
Arrested
NEW YORK. Jan. 20 i,P The
arrest on a deportation warrant of
Claudia Jones, negro woman writer
and secretary to the national wom
an's commission of the communist
party in the United States, was an
nounced today.
She is charged with being an alien
fa the United States in violation of
law In that she advocates and
teaches the overthrow of the gov
ernment by force.
She was arrested last night at her
Manhattan home by officers of the
Immigration service and the FBI,
and was removed to Ellis Island to
be held in custody pending release
on $1000 bond.
W. F. Watkins, district director
of immigration and naturalization,
gave her name as Claudia Vera
Scholnick. She was born in Trini
dad, British West Indies, February
21, 1915, and arrived in New York
February 9, 1924, aboard the steamer
Voltaire.

Flat Feet Are

Flat feet are responsible for a
certain amount of general fatigue,
as well as pain in the feet and legs.
In fact, flat feet are a common
source of difficulty, and they should
not be made fun of, siuce they are
a real problem to many people.
There are several conditions which
may cause flat feet. In some cases,
the difficulty may be the result of
a weakness in the arches or the
ligaments, present at birth. Flat
feet may also be caused by an injury
or nerve paralysis. The most com
mon cause, however, is a simple
breakdown of the arches, due to
excessive weight bearing, or to
poorly-fitting shoes combined with
insufficient exercise of the feet
themselves.
When flat feet develop suddenly,
there is usually a good deal of
pain, often quite sharp. When, as
is more commonly the case, the
arches give way gradually, there
may be little or no pain, but the
feet are weak nevertheless.
Even when pain is not present,
it is well to take care of flat feet,
because of the effect it may pro
duce on the general well-being and
on the feet themselves.
Supports Needed
Arches, which have been flat for
a long time, cannot always be built
up quickly. As a rule, it is best to
do this gradually, under the super
vision of someone who knows the
anatomy and functions of the feet.
Shoes must be carefully chosen.
Supporting layers usually of felt
must be added gradually inside the
shoes, and bars sometimes must be .
placed on the outside of the shoes.
Special exercises for the feet often
help to build up the strength of the
arches. In some cases, physicians
recommend immersing the feet
alternately in hot and cold water to
relieve the discomfort and stimulate
the circulation. In mast cases which
are properly treated, broken arches
can be built back to normal with
relief of the symptoms.
