GRAINS SHOW SHARP DROP
CHICAGO, Jhh. 19 MV-Orallis dropped sharply on the bonrd
of trade today on selling touched off by niitl-inflntlon proposals sub
mitted to the senate foreign relations committee by Bernard Baruch.
Losses extended to around 5 cents In wheat at times. Liquidation
came from both commission houses and local traders. Some support
was evident In wheat early from Southwestern Interests, suggesting
government purchasing of cash wheat, but It halted the decline only
temporarily.
Weakness tn securities, cotton and other markets had an Influence
on grains. Slop-loss orders were uncovered on the way down, acceler
ating the drop.
Among aBruch's proposals was one suggesting a reduction in food
and agricultural prices in exchange for guaranteeing farmers an assured
price for their crops for the next three years.
Wheat closed 6 U6' lower. May 2.961-,i!, corn was l to 4 lower,
May J2.63,4-il, oats were l!i-3' lower, May $1.35 V-l.25. and soybeans
were 7 to 8 cents lower, March S4.25'j.
The commodity Credit corporation announced It purchased 750.000
bushels of wheat at Chicago and 235,000 bushels at Kansas City last
Friday.

cember 31.
Pessimistic selling by profession
als and others ruled from the open
lug. Dealings were quiet until i
breif fast downturn around midday
when leading rails, oils and in
dustrials dropped 1 to 2 or more
points. The pace then slowed and
extreme losses were reduced in the
majority of cases near the close.
Transfers ran to around 1,100,000
shares.

this week that the weather, despite 1
freezing nights, is playing tricks
with signs of spring.
J. W. Gossett of 2964 Hope called
all last week he had meadowlarks
in his garden, and Mrs. C. D. Luns
ford said this morning that robins,
the traditional spring herald, are
in her neighborhood. The redbreasts
have been seen all winter by Klam
ath residents, disproving the theory
that they always fly south come

Gordon Perry, 63, -eteran news
paperman and columnist for the
Medford Mail Tribune, died after a
brief Illness at his home Saturday
night.
Perry, a navy veteran of World
War I, had written a column en
titled "The Smudge Pot" for nearly
35 years.

gress a reorganization plan trans
ferring the United States employ
ment service and the bureau of .m
ployment security to the depuriment
of labor.
The employment service is now
operating in the labor department
under a wartime executive order
while the bureau of employment
security is presently a unit of the
federal security agency.
The new plan will go Into effect
In 60 days unless both the senate
and hou.se reject it.

ployment compeamtion system.

finally made the two-thirds mile
distance. Bowers said that Akers
and Mnguire were knee-deep In ley
water and had to ball fast and
furiously on the return trip, while
towed by the rowers iu the smaller
boat.

Tins Incident also affected a
group of high school boys and girls

cross the lake to Odell Summit lodge
where they had reservations for the
night. Matrons in charge of the
youngsters were Mrs. Harold Turpin
and Mrs. Donald A. Brace whose
husband accompanied her. The en
tire group trudged the 2'4 miles
down the mountain to the lodge,
through knee-deep snow.
For many of the students, this i
was their first time In the snow, so
they had a real initiation into its
coldness. However, the next morn
ing they were all up early und the
majority rented sk;s, then scamp
ered for the ski tow. enjoying every
minute of their stay.
