Mack iR.-Wash. predicted today
the three Pacific coast states will
have greater prestige in the house
after reappointment based on the
1960 census. He believes they will
gain at least 14 additional members.
California now has 23 house mem
bers. Oregon four and Washington
six.
Mack said in a statement that he
believes California will have 33 rep
resentatives under the reappoint
ment. Washington eight or nine and
Oregon six.
He said he based his estimate on
a report on Pacific coast population
growth recently Issued by the li
brary of congress.
This estimates California had a
1947 population of 9.876.00O. Wash
ington 2,233,000 and Oregon 1,517,
000. The 1940 figures were 8.857.000
for California, 1.732.000 for Wash
ington and 1.088.000 for Oregon.
Representatives are apportioned
en basis of one for each 301,000 of
population or major fraction thereof.

land's police department has been
seriously Inefficient despite large
personnel and heavy money expen
diture, August Vollmer reported In
the concluding chapter of a study
prepared by the former Berkeley.
Calif, police chief.
His proposals for reorganization,
contained in earlier chapters of the
report, are now being put into ef
fect. In the report received yesterday
by Mayor Earl Riley, Vollmer said
Portland crime rates have gone up
steadily and are above the national
average. They can be lowered, he
said, by placing more uniformed po
lice on the streets, taking them
from over-manned departments.
Among factors listed by Vollmer
at responsible for low efficiency
were poor organization, inadequate
supervision, extremes in specializa
tion, failure to utilize patrolmen to
the extent of their abilities. Inade
quate records, inadequate pension
system and too low salaries.

5. Funeral services will be held at
the Halstead Funeral home, 3000
Sutter. Friday afternoon, with
burial in the national cemetery at
San Francisco.

nald and Michael Steven, twin sons
cf Mr. and Mrs. William M. Case of

mother from Klamath Valley hos
pital Thursday morning. The twin
bevs were the first pair of twins
born here in 1948.
Recovering Little Jannice Leard.
2'i-year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James Leard of 3838 Bristol,
was able to leave Klamath Valley
hospital Wednesday for her home.
The child had surgery for a rup
tured appendix, but is now greatly
improved.
Ill at Home Jack Hooks, owner
of the Cameo shop on Main, is quite
ill at the family home. 5825 S. 6th,
and will not be ir the store for an
other week or 10 days.

there. Mrs. Chamberlain may have
visitors.

2407 Wantland, Is recovering from
surgery at Klamath Valley hospital.
She was operated on January 7 and
Is doing nicely.

joined labor unions under suffrage
granted by occupation decree, but
an allied headquarters spokes
woman said today:
"Equality for women In Japanese
Industry remains largely an ideal."
Miss Golda Stander, Brooklyn, of
headquarters' labor division, said
various unions "contain undemo
cratic features which tend to pre
vent or discourage women's partici
pation in the general work of the
union."

Alaska Airlines
Consider New Base
SEATTLE. Jan. 15 ( An Alaska
Airlines spokesman said today that
o;nng of a maintenance base at
Great Falls is under consideration
but that the line is not considering
transfer of its main base of opera
tions from Seattle to the Montana
city.
His comment follow-ed a report
frcm Great Falls In which Mayor
Hjalmer C. Johnson said he was in
formed the line would transfer its
maintenance base and make Great
Falls Its entry port Into the States.
The spokesman said no definite
decision will be reached until after
James A. Wooten. president of the
line, visits Great Falls January 28.

At 11:20 today, students paying
their 10 cents admission settled
down in the auditorium to sec 35
minutes of acrobatics presented by
the girls' tumbling team. Dolores
Moon, president of the Oirls' Ath
letic club, announced the program,
which included all kinds of pyra
mids, balances, rolls und stands.
The girls have been practicing on
t'.iis program since a little after the
first of school, and plan to Invest
their money in a playday at the end
of the year, and Invite girls from
other schools to attend.
With Baldy's band to furnish tile
music, the Teen-Age club Is spon
soring the after-game dance Satur
day night in the Legion hall, as
announced by Director Bill Proc
ter at a meeting of the entire stu
dent Teen-Age council Wednesday.
This sounds like- a good time for
everybody with the price only 50
cents per person. If a good turn
out is had at this dance, there is
a possibility that every Saturday
nignt an orchestra will be secured
for teen-agers.
Every semester five or six mem
bers of the junior speech classes
are chosen to compete in the speech
contest given by Uie Toaslmastcr's
club. These students attend a
meeting of the Tonstmasters and
each gives a short speech. The date
set for this semester's contest is
Wednesday. January 21. One stu
dent was elected from each of Ger
ald Bevan's speech classes. These
six are Elmer Hamilton. Larry Wil- j
kinson, Loren Haroldsen, Nadtnei
Yockey, Leonard Wash and Rae
