were confronted with a weird twist
today In Seattle's recent combined
smoke shop apartment robbery as
Ittooo In government bonds, a bank
check for D.V), a bracelet, keys and
papers which were part of the loot
turned up at the terminal post
office.
The bonds and other articles
were In an envelope which also con
tained a pencilled note saying the
total amount stolen from the Turf
cigar store ante was "only about
111) ,000." The envelope was discov
ered In mall brought to the post
office yeaterday from downtown
boxea.
The note waa addreaaed to Oscar
TJerslaud, owner of the cigar store,
and signed "Pete."
After being shown tlie note, TJers
laud told detective he knew no one
by that name and could not account
for the return of the property.
TJeraland and hi wife were held
prlkoner In their apartment Satur
day night by two of five gunmen
while the other went to the Smoke
shop and looted the safe. Valuable
listed at $7500 alao were taken from
the apartment.
TJersland reported then that "sev
eral dozen 1100 bills" were missing
from the nufe.
He denied rumors today that the
loot amounted to more than $100,
000 and said that at moat not more
than 50,000 was stolen.
Police, who earlier cited the pos
sibility the gunmen might have been
member of an out-of-state mob.
