Thyroid Causes Toxic Goiter
By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D.
Written for NKA Service
The thyroid Is an important gland,
usually lying in the front part of the
neck below the larynx, or voice
box. When It Is behaving normally.
It produces a secretion which Is
necessary to maintain satisfactory
bodily functions.
In some people, for reasons which
are not thoroughly understood, the
thyroid may start to enlarge and
produce an abnormal secretion
which Is poured Into the blood
stream. This enlarged and abnormally-behaving
thyroid gland Is
called a toxic goiter. In addition to
enlargement, the other most com
mon symptoms are a rapid heart
rate, nervousness, loss of weight,
and protrusion of the eyeballs.
The symptoms alone may be suf
ficient for a skilled doctor to make

a diagnosis. However, a metabolism
test is almost always advisable. This
test Is simple and painless to take,
but measures quite well the degree
to which the thyroid Is overactive.
Normal metabolism varies from,
about minus IS to about plus 15; In
toxic goiter the result of the meta-,
bollsm test Is high and plus figures
of 30 and above are not at all un
common. Toxlo goiter should be discovered
as soon as possible. If It continues
too long untreated, It may cause
damage to the body which cannot
be completely overcome.
SURGERY USED
The most common treatment of
toxic goiter Is removal of a portion
of the enlarged thyroid gland by
surgery. A period of preparation be
fore operation Is generally advisable,
and helps the patient to go through
the operation with little difficulty.
It Is true that some methods of
treatment besides surgery are used
and are being studied. These meth
ods are valuable for some patients
with toxic goiter and may be de
veloped to have even more value In
the future. At present, however,
non-surglcal treatment of toxlo
goiter Is not suitable for all of those
who are afflicted.
