LINK RIVER FALLS, ONCE A
GOOD SIZED SPLASH, GAVE
NAME TO TOWN ON RIVER BANK
Where ore the falls?
That oft-heard question by newcomers and visitors is answered today by this excellent
picture from the Maude Baldwin collection of early-day photographs.
But it will be necessary to show questioners the picture,.
because the falls, as they are seen above and as they were
when they inspired a local booster to propose the name
. Klamath Falls for the town, aren't that way today. Dynamit
ing the reef above, and construction of a reclamation-power
dam, changed the character of Link river and there are no
falls of consequence today.
Link river falls, however, was quite a splash of white
water when Miss Baldwin, early-doy photographer and mem
ber of a well-known Klamath family, took the picture. Those !
were the days when salmon fought their way up Klamath j
and Link rivers and even into Upper Klamath lake and its
tributaries and in the picture you can see the lone figure I
of a fisherman standing on a rock with his line in the boiling
water below. '
The salmon runs stopped when a power dam was built j
on Klamath river many miles downstream. 1
The name of Klamath Falls was given to the little town !
of Linkville in 189' , when the place was only about 25 years
old. In the late 'eighties, the town began looking to incorpora
tion, and at the same time, some of the folks began talking
about a new name. Linkville was not generally disliked, ex
cept for the diminutive termination, but folks with big ideas
for the future thought something else would be better.
But before anything was done about it, the legislature
adopted a law incorporating the place as Linkville.
In the Klamath Star, April 10, 1891, there appeared the
following notation:
"Ira Leskard, who has been in Portland most of the time
since last summer, thinks the name of this town should be
Klamath Falls. That name advertises the fact there are falls
here, and thus gives the town an advantage fully recognized
os such by other towns similarly situated, though provided
by names of the falls at which they stand. 'There is,' he says,
'a great deal in the name of a town situated by a heavy cata
ract.' and we (the editor) are inclined to think so, too."
Lpsknrri was county nurvevor t the time. In December, 1H91, a peti
tion was nddreftscd to the poftt office department, Riving objections to
the name of Mnkville. In that month the Star commented that there
were some "dry-mouthed old settlers" who thought Linkville wan good
enough, as a name, but the "more spirited" wanted Klamath Falls.
The "more spirited" won out. The post office department granted the
petition, and on April 1, 1892, the name of the post office was changed
from I.inkrille to Klamath Falls. In 1803, the legislature granted a new
charter with the new name substituted. On the stroke of midnight, Mon
day, Feb. 6, 1893, Linkville eeased to exist and Klamath Falls was born.
