City police aald that a car passed
along the atreet Just aa the girl
dropped to the pavement, and wit
nesses at first reported it as a hit
and run accident. Officers said that
their Investigation showed the car
did not strike the girl.

that William Mux Beck, 23, a cook,
was held In the Bend city Jail today
In the Jail cell death ot Roy T.
Phillips, 63. Seneca.
Beck waa removed to the Bend
Jail over Uie week-end after a
coroner's Inquest.
The sheriff said Beck Is charged
with beating Phillips fatally Christ
mas night In the Burns Jail, Phil
lips battered body was taken from
the cell after a disturbance that was
witnessed by Jerry Wolfe, a Burns
city employe who rooms In the base
ment of the Burnt city hall, where
the Jail cells are located.
