Rescue Try
In Alaska
KODIAK, Alaska, Jim. 6 MV-Cut
ofl both by land and sea, nine and
possibly 10 shivering castaways
huddled on a rocky. Ice-coated point
or the Alaska peninsula, opposite
Kodlak Island, today as a navy tug
and a coast guard cutter waited out
a 60-mlle an hour storm before at
tempting a rescue.
For all but three of the men it
was their fifth night of exposure
to the freezing cold.
Heavy seas whipped up by the
tale balked rescue efforts Sunday
hir the third day, and forced the
cutter Clover to seek shelter in
Portage bay, at whose mouth the
men are stranded.
Three of the men are crewmen
from the nnvy tug Mataco.
Rescue Failure
They struggled to shore Saturday
night after their surf boat capsized
in a daring rescue attempt
The others have been stranded
since their 65-foot cannery tender,
the motorship Spencer, struck i
reef December 31 and broke up tn
the pounding surf. Aerial photo
graphs taken by a search plane
allowed a group of either six or
seven men huddled on the point.
Previous reports said six had been
seen.
"There were no visible casual
ties." the Kodiak naval base said.
The scene is but five miles over
land from the village of Kanatak,
but high cliffs and Impassable ter
. rain prohibits rescue attempts from
lhat direction, the navy said.
Only one of the stranded men
has been identified. He is Lt (jg)
E J. Kratochvil, Washington, D. C,
of the tug Mataco.
Three Dead In
Shooting Case
SEATTLE, Jan. 5 (Pi The "mis
placed Jealousy" of an estranged
husband led yesterday to the fatal
shooting of a Vashon island couple
and death of the distraught slayer.
The husband. Robert Maynard. a
power company lineman, killed
himself in the yard of his home
after shooting Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Esterle as they sat reading in their
living room.
County Detective Chief Adam
Lyskoski said Investigation dis
closed that Maynard, 44, "incor
rectly blamed his brother-in-law
and sister-in-law for his own mar
riage going on the rocks."
Mrs. Maynard told Lyskoski she
had seeirher husband emerge from
his car with a 30-30 carbine.
"I thought he was coming to kill
me. He had threatened to kill me
if I ever started divorce proceedings
again."
"I hid In a closet," she continued.
"I was afraid to breathe. Then I
heard shots and I ran out to a
neighbor's house and called the
sheriff."
Officers said Maynard made no
apparent attempt to find his wife.
Neither did he try to halt the
Esterle's 15 - year - old daughter,
Marilyn, who fled from an upstairs
room past the body of her mother
and drove to the home of a neigh
bor where she collapsed.

works agency said today.
Contracts let In Washington
state totaled $57,866,000 from Janu- !
ary through September, 1947, as
compared to but $22,131,000 the
previous year.
Oregon projects climbed from '

Ronnie's Interest since the last half
of his sophomore year when he

Bureau Opens
Opening of the World Wide
Travel bureau today, with head
quarters In the lobby of the Wl
nenia hotel, was announced by
Harold Clapp, general manager as
veil as owner of the bureau.
The bureau Is the agent of the
United Air Lines and was estab
lished in Redmond about a year
ago. The bureau lr the agent as
well, for most of the east and west
coast steamship lines and its pur
pose is to book travel and accom
modations at no cast to the in
dividual. Air travelers may now
pick up their tickets at the bureau
instead of at the airport. Clapp ad
vised. Clapp will operate the bureau
here at the present time.

to the slate convention of the Amer
ican veterans committee wound up
their sessions here yesterday with
a resolution opposing the appoint
ment of a Portland restaurant oper
ator to the state game commission.
The state council was Instructed
to oppose appointment of Larry

that his restaurant refused service
to Carol Brice. a negro concert slaue
singer when she was here for a re
cent performance.

Paul Hansen, vice chairman of
