Soft Coal
Production Up
NKW YORK, Jan. 1 iVi When
all the figures are In, the nation's
soft coal production for 1W7 Is ex
pected to exceed BiriomjOOO tons,
according a Ivan A. OH-en, editor
of Iron Age. That would be the
second best year In the history ot
the bituminous coal Industry, and
an lnrrease ot 78.000,000 tons over
1940.
The editor of the Industry maga
zine says a major factor In the In
creased output Is a sharp rise In
overseas shipments 43.000.000 tons.
That would be a drop ot some four
ier rent from the 1M8 total of 60,
MiCOOO tons.
Olven predicts that 1948 produc
tion of bituminous coal, barring pro
tracted work stoppages, will be
good, erhaps as good as In 1947
H the weather returns to normal
I't 1048, he says anthracite should
benefit rrom a substantial Increase
In demand.
