Six Men Rescued
From Alaska Wilds

Lost, Medical Team Still Missing
NOME, Alaska, Doc. 30 (AP) Six ol eiolil crewmen from o crashed B-29 were back
to solely today through the heroism of two Alaska bush pilots, but five other men are still
missing and leared dead In the (rigid wastes of the Seward peninsulo, 95 miles north of
Nome.
The bodies of two men, thought to be members of the three-man parachute team that
looped to the aid of the stricken fliers Saturday night, were belioved to hove been sighted
less than 500 yords from the crcibh scene. A driver and dog team will attempt to locate them
today.
An intensive search also will be continued for the pilot of the Superfortress, Lt. Vern
H Arnplt, Santa Ana, Calif , ond Navigator Lt. Frederick I. Sheetz, Keyser, W. Va.
Neither hos been seen sinro they set out together Christmas night, 48 hours after
the big ship plowed into Iho side of a low hill. They told fellow crewmen they would seek
nid ot the Eskimo village of Shishmorcf, 50 miles to the north.
The daring rescue was performed by Frank H. Whaley of the Wien Alaska Airline
and William Muni of the Munz Airline, both of Nome.
Flying in 40 below zero weather they set their small, single-engine planes down in a
hazardous landing on tho crest of a hill close to the crumpled bomber, the Clobbered
Turkey.
