Plan To Quit
VA Positions
WASHINGTON, Dec. 39 tiW The

loss next spring of 1400 physicians,
more than a fifth of its hospital
staff, Maj. Gen. Paul R. Hawley
said Saturday.
Hawley said replacement of those
doctors will be the No. 1 problem
of the man who succeeds him as
medical director for the veterans
administration. Hawley has re
signed, effective next Wednesday,
after two years of service.
The doctors Involved are young
officers trained In the wartime army
specialised training aid navy V-12
programs. The terms of 1400 expire
In May. Hawley told a reporter.
The officers in many cases were
assigned to the more Isolated hos

difficult to obtain civilian personnel.
Considerable numbers are report
ed to have expressed their dissatis
faction, and their Intention of leav
ing VA upon completion of their
two-year terms.
Ninety-three members of the first
contingent to enter VA service quit
The veterans administration em
ploys about 6700 physicians for its
126 hospitals and their 118.000 pa
tients. My successors second major
problem will be certain fiscal con
siderations arising out of limita
tions on the appropriation this year,
and the need of defending the 1949
budget," Hawley added.
Everything else Is moving along
pretty well, but we have not accom
plished everything we have set out
to do. It will be several years be
fore the VA medical program Is at
the level we would like to attain."
Hawley said the problem of
chronic alcoholism among the vet
erans still Is increasing, and pre
dicted that VA physicians will treat
10000 cases of alcoholism this year,
compared with 6459 last year and
3529 in 1945.

and announced his intention of
forming a "popular opposition"

Greek Situation
Considered Grave
LONDON. Dec. 29 iPi The
British foreign office declared to
day that recognition by any nation
ol Gen. Markos Vlfiades' newly an
nounced guerrilla regime in Greece
would be regarded as causing a
"grave deterioration in the world
situation."
A foreign office spokesman vol
unteered the observation at his reg
ular daily news conference. He
would not indicate what action
Britain might take if recognition
should be accorded.
The governments of Greece's
northern neighbors Yugoslavia,
Albania and Bulgaria already have
been charged by a United Nations
Investigating committee with aiding
the communist-led guerrillas.
