today that it was hoped to liuve a
petition ready lor presentation to
the city council by January e.
This is expected to clean up the
racatlon matter and to wipe the
date clean (or the north entrance
lob. This does not include the
three streets in the Hot Springs
rea, Erie, Earle and Melrose, but
Perkins said he understood the
highway commission would call for
jlds on the job without demanding

ureets would be closed. Residents
jf the three streets mentioned have
previously protested their closing to
the city council.
The stale highway commission will

January. The commission rejected
previous bids on the grounds they

resident engineer here has been
isked to re-submit estimates in the
ace of rising costs. The bids will
be for grading, surfacing, bridge
work, and also for the hot water
job which Includes drilling a well
and laying hot water pipes on the
incline from the Esplanade over
head crossing to the canal. The
state has already purchased suf
ficient ground near the canal to
drill the well.

cide de Gasperi added five new
ministers to his hard-pressed Chris
tian democratic cabinet Monday,
bringing the support of the labor
socialist and republican parties to
the fight against the communist
dominated extreme left.
President Enrico de Nicola swore
In these new ministers:
Giuseppe Saragat, former ambas
sador to France and leader of the
moderate left labor socialist party.
Vice premier.
Randolfo Pacciardi, leader of the
leftist republicans, vice premier.
Cipriano Faccinetti. republican,
minister of defense.
Ludovico d'Arngona. labor so
cialist, frequently prrested for leftist
activity and forced to flee Italy to
France as early as 1895. minister of
posts and telecommunications.
Roberto Tremelloni, labor so
cialist, a Milan merchant and em
ployment expert, minister of indus
try and commerce.

Man-Horse Battle
WATERLOO, Ore, Dec. 16 There
Is no chance of a rematch In the
classic man vs. horse tug-of-war In
which a 1900-pound logging horse
came out victor over Chet Fitzwater
of Lebanon.
Fitzwater reported he is content
to abide by the decision reached
Saturday when he was yanked to
his feet within 30 seconds by
"Baldy."

Nimitz Quits
As Navy Head
WASHINGTON. Dec. 16
Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz
Monday stepped out as chief of
naval operations and Adm. Louis
Drnfeld was sworn in as his succes
sor
Secretary of Defense Forrestal.
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and
many other top military leaders and
government officials gathered at the
navy department to witness the
transfer of command.
Immediately afterwards. Nimitz
left by auto for San Francisco where
he will be stationed as a special ad
viior to the secretary of navy.
Corridors of the navy building and
the sidewalks outside were lined
with navy employes ar the 62-year-old
wartime chief of the Pacific
fleet was "piped over the side" in
traditional fashion.
The honor guard stood at atten
tion, the navy band played the "Ad
miral's March," a r d Forrestal
stepped up to say farewell.
At the swearing in ceremony.
Secretary of the Navy John L. Sul
livan likened Nimitz to naval heroes
of the past and Denfeld paid tribute
to him as "one of the greatest naval
officers of all times."

president, new homesteaders' group.
Several other representatives of
each group were present, making a
total of about 40 at the conference,
which was sponsored by the Tule
chamber. Anderson is chairman of
the Tule chamber roads committee
and is president of the Tulelake
Growers.

Canned Peas To
Go To Yule Ship
PENDLETON, Ore.. Dec. 16
A carload or two of Umatilla coun
ty's surplus of canned peas will be
loaded into the Northwest's Christ
mas ship for Europe's needy, the
Rev. O. D. Harris. Pendleton drive
coordinator, announced Monday.
He said the $3000 set lor Pen
dleton s goal would fill one car ol
1760 cases while other communi
ties throughout the county were
expected to contribute a second car
lead. Originally it was planned for
Pendleton to send dry peas because
of the lighter weight, but the com
mittee decided it would be best to
utilize some of this area's surplus
crop of canned peas.
Boy Injured In
Traffic Mishap
A six-year-old boy was slightly
injured early this morning when he
raj into the side of an automobile
at 11th and Main. The little boy,
Thomas Mutchie, was on his way to
school at Sacred Heart academy
when he stepped off the curb and
hit the side of a car which was
turning the corner.
He was knocked down and the
driver of the car. Ralph McNutt.
37, Southern Pacific employe from
Kirk,' stopped and drove Thomas
home. His mother, Mrs. Luke
Mutchie, 133 Mortimer, said that ne
had a bump on his head but was all
right. The lad went on to school.
