Work Starts
For Season
Wheels were already grinding for
the operation of the Christmas Bu
reau machinery in the basement of
the Klnmath county health unit
and volunteer workers were faced
with a big Job which will Increase
as Christmas draws nearer.
Money and gifts will be accepted. I
as well as food donations, and all ;
will be distributed to families in I
need. The Christmas Bureau is the
project of the Youth Council of
which Samuel Smith, city recreation
director, is the head. All agencies
Interested in youth in the city and
county, are affiliates of the Christ
mas Bureau.
Mrs. S. Banks Hopkins is chairman
of the volunteer committee, and her
assistants are Mrs. Lloyd Young,
Carolyn Collier, Wanda Shaw and
Dorotliea Elhngson. They will be
on duty from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m in
the health unit rooms, telephone
3300, until Christmas.
Anyone knowing of a family in
need, is asked to contact workers at
3300 and give as much Information
as possible.
Smith said today that the purpose
of the Christmas B". :au is to serve
as a clearing house for all those in
need during holiday time.
"We are making this a central
clearing point through which we
can control Christmas giving and to
avoid duplication and to assure all
farulies will receive consideration.
Smith said.

Employment in the Klamath
basin started its November slump
with the Uosure of small logging
operations and is continuing in De
cember at the usual rate.
This situation Is normal for the
season. Jack Ahneler, manager of
the Oregon Mate employment of
fice, said Thursday. Larger logging
companies have reduced employ
ment but plan to operate on a
small scale all winter if weather
permits.
Reduced building activity due to
the chill weather is another factor
in the upward swing of unemploy
ment which totals more than the
estimated 800 for this time, num-,
bering 1000. with approximately i
225 women. Most of these women !
I were employed in harvest work
which was wound up at the end of
November.
