Thanks, also, to the weather man, w ho came through
in grand style. The morning after the game was def i
initely scheduled, two or three inches of snow fell
here. It looked bad. Thereafter, the weather cleared
and several beautiful days melted the snow and we
"had perfect crisp, sunshiny weather for the game. But
vc wouldn't advise anyoody attempting to schedule
any football games here In December hereafter. It
gives the Jitters, believe us.
I As for the game Itself, we felt that Henley was not
quite at Its top season form, but nevertheless turned in
a swell game against a big, well-coached Amity team.
The Hornets had a couple of flashes of brilliance that
were really the highlights of the game. The statistical
edge which decides those tie-score championship
games was definitely Amity's, and we have no kick
coming though we wish someone would figure up a
i better way of doing it.

puppet of Soviet Russia, the export-import bank,
an agency of the government of the United States, with
the consent of the state department, made a loan to
Poland of $40,000,000 and extended further credits to
Poland of $50,000,000 to purchase surplus American
property held In Europe. These loans, amounting to
S90.000.00l), were unsecured.

devastation of the war ... In the view of this govern
ment, however, economic freedom and political freedom

and Potsdam must be fulfilled In their entirety. It ;
remains true today, as it was when that pledge, was
first given, that for the Polish people to achieve their '
goals of freedom and democracy, they must be given
the opportunity freely to elect a government which
represents the will of the Polish people." ;

Poland s coal during 1948-1947 was shipped into Soviet
Russia, even depriving the Poles. Nevertheless, the
United States shipped locomotives to Poland made of j
American steel at a time when we suffer from a steel I
shortage and Secretary ol Commerce Harrlnian pro
poses rationing steel for American consumption. 1
How It Will Be Used
THE Polish credit is to be used as follows, according
to the export-import bank:
Steam locomotives, including spare parts $16,000,000 ;
Machine tools and similar equipment for railway j
repair shops and track maintenance 15,000.000 !
Coal mining equipment . 5.000.000 ;
Railway communications equipment 4.000.000 j
Acting Secretary of Slate Lovett makes this point j
that the credit of 540.000.000 to Poland was for the '
purpose of helping that country to purchase coal cars '.
and locomotives in the United Stales In order to facill-
tate the transportation of coal from Poland to Western 1
Europe and the Balkans.
A further excuse seems to be that the steam loco
motive manufacturers need a subsidy and this is one
way to give It to them. In other words, what seems
to be an obsolescent industry is to be kept alive by
shipping our irreplaceable steel abroad.
This is the argument:
'. . . We i the export-import banki were informed by
locomotive manufacturers in the United States that,
although their plants could produce approximately
1800 steam locomotives per year, they had orders from
U. S. railroads for only 80 steam locomotives. It is
our understanding that this situation has not material
ly changed and that, although the locomotive manu
facturers have a considerable backlog of orders from
U. S. railways for diesel locomotives, they are des
perately ill need of orders to keep the plants in which
they produce steam locomotives in operation." 1
Steam Passing Out
IT is true that the manufacturers of the steam loco
motives can produce an annual average of 1800 steam
locomotives, varying as to size and type. They now
have orders for a total of about 200 steam locomotives; i
35 for American consumption: 165 for foreign con-
sumption. But approximately 1000 diesel electric
locomotives are now on order, principally for American ;
railroads. These diesel locomotives vary from one to
four units per locomotive and the horsepower ranges
from 60 to 6000 each.
So what It comes to is that most American railroads .
want diesel electric locomotives, and the steam loco
motive is passing out. The American manufacturers '
d( steam locomotives ought to shift from an unwanted ;
to a wanted commodity or go out of business. Instead, :
they and the state department and the export-import ,
bank cook up orders for 165 steam locomotives to be I
sent abroad but paid for by the American taxpay.T
