Illinois, Indiana, and part of Mlrh
ton today, at the aame time be
stowing a biut-furnace embrace of
(reeUnc on the hut.
The weather bureau at Chicago
aaid hot weather would continue
today in Illinois, Indiana and the
southeastern half of lower Michigan,
but that cooler air was working in
to those areas and should bring
relief by nightfall.
The rest of the Midwest, blissfully
welcoming the arrival of the cool
air, expected high readings In the
80s today, but ahead of the eastward-moving
coo! front the max
imum temperatures were due for a
return to the 80 s.

Meanwhile, the heat wave, which
had become an old story to residents
of the Midwest, descended on dis
grunllrd easterners.
Boston reported a high Wednes
day of 99 and New York Cy 97,
with no relief forecast for the. east
ern states until Friday night.
The lowest temperatures reported
from the northern hemispnrre yes
terday was 21 decrees at Big Piney.

Red Cross disaster nursing com
mittee today asked all nurses not
on active duty to register lit view
of the state' health board's report of
five new poliomyelitis cases.

man of the committee, said the five
rases reported in the past week did
not create an emergency but a few
more serious cases would require
prompt nursing attention.

cases in the state this year,

Savings Due

President Truman said today he
expects to be able to give an of
ficial estimate on "savings" by the
Inst session Of congress within about
two weeks.
In a news conference last week.
Mr. Truman disputed republican
claims of economies running higher
than four billion jlollars. and an
nounced he had ordered an investi
gation to give the true picture, not
appropriation "shifts and changes."
The republican claims of econo
mies were in relation to the 37.-
500.000.000 budget Mr. Truman pre
sented for operations of the govern
ment in the 12 months which began
last July 1.
The president told Ills news con
ference today that he hopes to have
a report in about 15 days on the
budget situation.

Death Suspect

Lloyd Shored and a Seattle police
detective prepared today to fly to
Martinet, caul., to question a man
booked there as Aubrey Smith In
connection with the two-year-old
slaying of a shoe store manager.
L. J. Bower, chief of the Contra
Costa county, Calif., sheriffs crim
inal Identification bureau, said there
that Smith, 39, a transient was ar
rested In nearby Richmond and
jailed for 10 days ou a vagrancy
charge.
Shorett recently filed a first de
gree murder charge gainst an
Aubrey Smith In connection with the
shoe store slaying. The prosecutor
said he would fly south as soon as
extradition papers are signed by
Governor Wallgren.
Another man, Richard Brltlon.
29. has twice been sentenced to hang
as a participant in the fatal holdup,
and twice reprieved. During his
trial the prosecution contended that
an unidentified accomplice was the
actual killer.

afternoon, probably killing four of
a party of 10 Japanese mountain
climbers near the summit.
The 8315-foot volcano sent clouds
of smoke and ash thousands of feet
Into the air In six separate erup
tions within tour hours. There was
no lava.
Japanese rescuers brought 10
climbers to sufety, but one was
burned so badly ho was not expected
to live. They said four others wr
missing and they were almost cer
tain that two of these who were
nearest the crater had peiislu'd.
