Long Study
"The manacement of The Star
came to this decision only after a
long and careful study of the prob
lems which conlrom men- probi
ty "Terrific increases in every hem
that goes into the publishing of a
newspaper, chiefly labor and news
print, have brought this industry to
a point where only those with heavy
volume could survive.
. "And thru the period where
volume could have been attained
this newspaper found Itself facing
newsprint shortages which prevent
ed that goal being reached.
"As a result it came into the post
war period with handicaps which
have proved too serious to be over
come." First Barley
Shipped Out
MERRILL, August 13 -The first
carload of Hannchen malting barley
was shipped from the Klamath
basin Tuesday, from the 1M7 har
vest. Shippers were Shuck brothers
and the buyer was E. A. Webb of
Anhcuser - Busch, brewing company
of St. Louis. Mo., assisted by E. P.
Erler. here negotiating for the crop.
Buyers from other companies are
also in the locality.
Malt content in barley from the
basin is reported very high this year,
the quality better than expected and
the yield good. The crop recovered
from late frosts with little damage.
A few fields are being harvested
now but the main crop will be cut
in about 10 days or two weeks, grow

Klamath and Paiute languages. I
Anti-liouidalion leaders will bring
in many other points on top of their
firm denial of the right of congress
to legislate their reservation out of
existence.
One is a claim the Indians have
for $18,000,000 from the united
States as settlement for a boundary
dispute. The claim has been out
standing since 1887.
Another is that a majority of
Indians voting in the tribal general
council have consistently turned
down liquidation proposals. Still
another reason Is the tribal business
committee's opinion that a majority
of the members of the tnbe are not
ready to assume the full responsi
bility of citizenship, that many
would quickly lose or be roDDea oi
their wealth, that many would wind
up on the Klairath county relief
rolls.
All this is not taken to mean that
the Klamaths do not desire their
freedom eventually, but the time
now is not right. And if the time
Is not right, the fault lies with the
government for its system of man-
hand in deciding how and when
their reservation is to be liquidated.
Spud Growers
Ask Support
The Kliimitlh county AAA com
uiltteo has extended Uio closing ditto
of eligibility for support prices mi
K)tntors. Formerly this duio wits sot

tended to and including Monday,
September 1,'
According to C. A. Henderson,
many growers have not given much
thought tu eligibility fur support. It
should be kept In mind that to be
eligible for support prices, growers
must first, plant within their goal
and second, fill out a certlltciite of
eligibility with a deposit of one cent
per sack on innrketnble potatoes
this year, tu be In line lor supports.
At lite end of the first dosing per
iod, less than 100 growers had filled
out the necessury certificate. Merely
planting within the goal is not suf
ficient for support eligibility. Sup
ports for late crop potatoes reach
M90 for December and $:U0 for
January and continue at that figure
(or the rest of the marketing season
of the 1M7 crop.
Contrary to expectations, the
August 1 forecast of potato produc
tion for 1947 showed an increase of
10 million bushels over the July 1
forecast, making the estimated pro
duction 361.000.000 bushels. This fact
may have hnd something to do with
the drop In prices of early potatoes
tu whero they are now below sup
port prices In soiuo districts. In
some early Oregon counties prices
dropped to &c below supports and
growers are how attempting to se
cure supports although they did not
sign eligibility cprtillcntes during
the period In which this could be
done in older to Insure support tor
curly potatoes. Closing dale for
these potatoes wus early In July.
Applications toe. support eligibility
cun be completed at the AAA ofllce.

to'niinwed to become conversant

take over now.
Liquidation may come in an
orderly manner in five years or
during the next generation, but the
economic help and moral support oi
the United Stales is needed to pre
pare the Indians for their step Into
citizenship then. They are not ready
now. Division of tribal holdings now
would be laying the Indians open to
looting by unscrupulous persons who
would take advantage ot'thelr un-
preparedness.
A final argument will hit at the
method of approach used by Sen
ators Morse and Cordon In Intro
