The officer said that Master Sgt.
Woodrow Matthews, crew chief on
the plane In which the two Hamil
ton field men were killed, reported
he had placed a heay box aboard
the bomber before lt left McChord
field. It Is presumed here the box
contained samples of the metallic
substance.
The plane was destroyed by fire
and neither the box nor the mater
ial was retrieved.

day can slip Into another Dark Age.
The troubles of the British, which
are basic bread and butter troubles
tracking back to lack of production
of the things which people must
hare to exist, point that out to us
very clearly.

plenty to eat and plenty to wear
but we are already suffering from
lack of housing to shelter us from
the storm. Already, you see, we
are beginning to look stark funda
mentals In the eye.
All due to LACK OF PRODUC
TION.
We are STILL an island of rela
tively riotous plenty. But don't fool
yourself. We can't remain happy
and prosperous in a. world that is
slipping back into the Dark Ages.
Unless we - can bring some
semblance of order and normal
production back into the world, we

Queens' Skyline Trail Ride
Ends At Crater Lake With
Everyone Happy, But Tired
After .nearly a week of living
close to nature on the rugged -trails
of the Northwest, the Queens Sky
line ride was cancelled by mutual
agreement, on Friday.
The ride, planned to extend to
Portland, covering points of In
terest en route and 30 days of time,
for the entertainment of Mrs. Jim
Matteson (Queen Edna), Mrs. Guy
Williamson, chosen Queen-For-A-Day
on May 6 over a Mutual net
work program, and Jim Matteson,
was culminated at Crater Lajte na
tional park. '
Lloyd "Andy" Andrews, operator
of Andy's Guide service. v who of
fered the guided trail ride to Mrs.
Williamson on her previous visit to
Klamath Falls, advised the party
that due to illness and other cir
cumstances he was unable to con
tinue the trip beyond Crater lake.
The riders, all "tenderfeet." show
ing the marks of travel, were never
theless noticeably disappointed In
foregoing future hardships on the
trail and entertainments offered in
the Itinerary, however they agreed
that lt would be nice to get home
earlier than expected. The Matte
sons, who live In Hawthorne. Calif.,
have a small son whom they left
In the care of friends.
Local business men gave the vis
itors a night at the Rim lodge at
Crater lake and offered a trip by
car this week-end over the terri
tory they would have covered on
horseback.

convicts picked the right kind of
vehicle to escape prison during
Texas' torrid heat wave but they
made one mistake.
They slipped under an Ice cream
truck and were well on their way
to freedom when one got too close
to the exhaust pipe and had to be
carried to a hospital here for heat
exhaustion. The second also was
recaptured because of his compan
ion's plight.

of whom had ridden since child
hood pony rides.
Besides the stiffness mid aching
muscles acquired from li" unusual
exercise of riding, several other In
cidents along the troll were chalked
up as experiences lo recount around
the fireside on long winter eve
nings. The colt Mrs. Williamson
was riding slipped crossing a stream
and fell on her. bruLlng her side
and hip. but no bones were broken
and outside of edging into a chair
at an angle when sitting later, all
was well.
A short side trip, seven miles, not
on the itinerary was .lade when the
guide, missing the blazes along the
trail, took the party on a slight
detour into virgin territory. Sleep
ing on the bosom of Mother Nature
was a little rough on the riders the
first nights out but thev were soon
able to adjust themselves to her
curves, to .rising at the crack of
dawn to Matteson's whistled bugle
call, catching flaptacks on the third
flap and other details of a pack
trip one all three agreed they
would never forget.
