This terminal date as fixed when
the president approved senate Joint
resolution 123, the VA aide ex
plained. He reported Its principle
effects as follows:
For purposes of education and
training, loan guarantees and read
justment allowance provided In the
OI bill, and for vocational re
habilitation of disabled veterans un
der Public Law 16, the period con
sidered war service thus becomes
September 16, 1940 through July
25, 1W7.
Persons entering service after July
25 will not become eligible for CI
bill benefit, and any compensation
or pension awarded veterans and
their dependent as s result of that
service will be paid at peace-time
rates, Instead of the higher war
rates.
Those who served on active duty
at any time during the period of
September 16. 1940 through July 25,
1947 and then are discharged under
conditions other than dishonorable
after at least 90 days' total service
'both war and peace-time) are en
titled to certain OI bill benefit. So
are such veterans with less than 90
days service who were discharged
for service-incurred disabilities.
Beneilis ior which these two
groups ot veterans may qualify are
as follows:
1. At least one year of Ul bill edu-
'cation or training.
In addition to
i the year, the veteran acquires ellgi-
uimy tur M auumuiuti (jenuu equal
to the length of time served during
the war period defined above, up" to
four years maximum. VA defrays
cost of tuition, books and supplies
and pays the veteran a living al
lowance. 2. Full GI loan guarantee benefits
for home, farm and business loans.
VA guarantees half of the veterans
loan up to a maximum commitment
of $4000 on real estate and (2000 on
non-real estate loans.
3. Readjustment allowance for un
employed and self-employed vet
erans who have a minimum of 90
days' service during the war period
defined above. Entitlement is based
on length of war service, the vet
eran receiving eight weeks of allow.
ances for each of the first three
months of such service, and four
weeks for each additional month, up

ing she was unable to complete tele
phone call to Anchorage, Alaska,
because of a strike of operators In
the northern city.
The operator said she was advised
telephone service went on an emer
gency basis at 10 p. m. (PST) lost

tional Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers (AFL) in Anchorage had
turned down a five per cent wage
increase offered by the city, and set
a midnight deadline in their nego
tiation tor increases ranging from
17 to 19 per cent.

Baby Dies
In Hospital
SEATTLE. Aug. 1 Mi A six-day-old
Kennewick girl, flown here
late yesterday for an emergency
operation, died at 2 a. m. today
in Children's Orthopedic hospital
despite efforts of physicians to
save her life.
Hospital attendants said the
baby. Linda Kay Darby, daughter
ot Mr. and "Mrs. Phil Darby ot
Kennew:ak, did not .undergo the
operation because her condition
was too critical. Darby Is a Ken
newick construction worker.
The baby had no opening in her
stomach and was incapable of
taking food. She had been fed
Intravenously since birth.
With congestion of the lungs de
veloping, the baby was placed in
an incubator and under an oxygen
tent and flown to Seattle, in com
pany with her father and nurse,
Mrs. Rose Coffey.

Don Coyle made the flight in an
Inland Airways plane from Vista
field, the Kennewick airport, to
Boeing field in 55 minutes.
Auto Accident
Injures Driver
TULELAKE, Calif., Aug-. I Wil
liam Koester, representative of the
Great Lakes Steel corporation en
route here from San Francisco, re
ceived painful injuries late Monday,
four miles south of D.-rls when he
was crowded from the highway in
an "attempt to prevent a head-on
collision.
Koester was picked up by J. J.
Smith of Tulelake and taken to
Klamath alls, later being brought
here for treatment of facial cuts.
