Knlplne Plywood company, located
on the Weed highway, will continue
to operate on its present baa la re
gardless of an announcement by
Plywood. Inc., of Detroit, that It Is
offering stock for sale to raise about
$768,500 and exercise an option to
buy all outstanding common stock
of the local firm.
The Kalpine company Is not a
Ralph L. Smith Lumber company
enterprise, as erroneously stated
Saturday, but Is a separate com
pany located near the Ralph L.
Smith firm on the Weed highway
and headed by P. V. Russell, Seat
tle, president and general manager.
A. J. Honzel of Klamath Palls is
the manager of the plant. The
firm has a rated capacity of 24.000.

Shooting
PASCO. Wash, July 21 WV-Two
men were being held here today in
connection with a p re-dawn Sunday
shooting scrape that resulted in
hospitalization of one officer and
wounding of a second.
Each of the two officers. Police
man Arden Palmer and Sheriff Har
vey Huston, was struck by two bul
lets. Palmer, paralyzed by a bullet
which shattered his thigh, also was
struck In the right armpit. Huston
was hit on the left hand and left
shoulder, but declined hospitaliza
tion. The shooting occurred as the of
ficers investigated a housewife's re-,
port that two men had entered the
navy homes administration build
ing. Police Chief Alfred L. McKibbln
said the arrests were made after
Huston assertedly recognized the
voice of one assailant.
A large quantity of property, in
eluding tires, cameras, radios, clocks
and machine tools, were found and
Impounded for investigation, Mc
Kibbln said.
Crash. Short
Circuit's Alarms
PHILADELPHIA, July 21 '
The woman driver swerved her car
suddenly. It knocked down one pole,
containing one fire alarm box.
And It short-circuited all of the
suburban Manayunk'i 27 alarm
boxes. Mrs. Beatrice Grirfin. 42,
unable to stop at the foot of a hill,
crashed into the pole to avoid
plunging directly Into a heavy
trafficked street. It took 30 min
utes to get the fire alarm boxes
working again.
State Board To
Talk Buildings '
SALEM, July 21 W The state
emergency board and state board of
control will hold a Joint meeting
here at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday to decide
whether to begin construction of
three buildings at Falrvlew home
for feeble-minded persons.
The low bid on the project was
1742,740, or $83,000 less than the
estimate.
W. C. Smith company, Portland,
was low bidder on the buildings,
which are an employes cottage,
patients cottage, and a laundry
building.

The AAP had even larger bombs

They described the 42.000-pound-er
as a "general purpose, block
buster" type.
There was a hint over the week
end, meanwhile, that the military
may be looking Into the future for
an even more fearful weapon an
atomic bomb which when dropped
from a high altitude might sink
deep Into the earth and produce a
man-made quake.
An AAP announcement of forth
coming tests with deep-penetration
bombs on a submarine assembly fac
tory at Farge. Germany, referred
specifically only to twe standard
explosive bombs developed since
wars end. They are the 25.000-
pound "Amazon'' and "Samson."
But the announcement conclud
ed with this cryptic statement:
"With the Introduction of atomic
warfare in World War II. It Is logi- I
cal that the need for these special
ized types of bombs may be even
greater for future defense."

resentatives were present. Future
development of the county along
the various lines were discussed. It
was shown by the stockmen that
there were 30.000 acres of land that
could be used for forage, and 90.000
acres of privately owned land that
could be used for tho same purpose,
if worked over and seeded. If this
were done, they claim that Modoc
county could carry from three to five
times as much stock as at the pres
ent time. .
The directors stated that they
would take the matter up with the
proper officials and find out what
can be done.
The survey that is being made
covers five counties in the Cascade
Wonderland belt. It Is sponsored
by the government and the state,
and is the first and only one that
Is functioning at the present time.
Dale Berry, local Ford dealer,
chairman of the Modoc county sur
vey, was highly complimented by
the directors as to the most com
prehensive report made up to the
present time.

League Meets
MACDOEL, Calif., July 18 Claud
Oillis. Yreka, former Siskiyou coun
ty district attorney was present at
the second meeting of the newly or
ganized Butte Valley Improvement
league to give information concern
ing the legal technicalities of in
corporating. The meeting was held
July 18 in the Macdoel school house
with George Jones, chairman, pre
siding. Cillis will be present it the
next meeting. August 18.
Further plans were discussed for
obtaining fire fighting equipment for
protection of the Macdoel and Mt.
Hebron communities.
Four committees were appointed
by Jones with Charles Thompson
as chairman of the finance com
mittee. Roy Shoemaker and Waller
As per will serve on the equipment
committee. Edward Johnson and
Robert Meglasson are on the com
mittee for organization of the fire
district, and the entertainment com
mittee which will be responsible for
raising part of the funds will- be
handled by Mrs. Rex Crltzmaker,
chairman, Mrs. Waller Jones, Mrs.
Charles Thompson and Mrs. Edward
Johnson.
Meetings will be held the third
Tuesday of each month, and a spe
cial meeting will be called In the
near future by the entertainment
committee.
Veteran Drowns
In Ocean
TAFT. July 21 WV-John R. Stines.
31, Portland, drowned In the surf
here yesterday when a rowboat cap
sized near the mouth of the Siletz
river, throwing the young veteran
and his brother and sister-in-law
into the water.
The other two, M?. and Mrs. Robert
P. Stines, Portland, were rescued
when Russell Bailey and Ben Gcr
tulla took a rowboat through the
surf. The rescuers could not locate
the younger brother.

Democratic strategists said their
members are prepared to talk at
length in a move to block a vote
they fear would approve an investi
gating resolution by Senator Kem
(R-Mo.)
These senators told reporters they
think the republicans will abandon
the Kem proposal rather than delay
adjournment of congress beyond
next Saturday.
Senator White of Maine, the re
publican leader, told reporters there
Is "substantial sentiment" among
his party members to keep the sen
ate going until there Is a ballot. .

Outlaw Okayed

Legislation to outlaw the poll tax
as a requirement for voting In fed
eral elections was passed today by
the house. It now goes to the senate.
The vole was 280 to 112.
There are no plana for considera
tion of the bill this year In the sen
ate, where it has been blocked re-
! pealedly In the past by southern
imuusicrs.
Called up unexpectedly, house ac
tion came over the futile objections
of a group of southern representa
tives who tried parliamentary de
vices to block a final vote. They
succeeded only In delaytr.fi the show
down several hours.

asserted the legislation invades the
right of states to run their own elec
tions and thereby violates the con

Festival Ends

three-day cherry fesllval, held for
the first rime since pre-war days,
was a financial success, officials
said today.
The festival ended Sulurduy night.
More than 30.000 festival buttons,
