Leaders Fail
NEW YORK. July 21 V-Buying
of rails propped Uie stock market
average today altnougn many lead
ers faltered and dealings dwindled
to a low tor the month.
The direction was cloudy until
around midday when the carriers
enjoyed a bulge which Jailed to
spread to most other sections.
Activities soon tapered. Top gains
running to 3 or more points were
reduced In most cases and a number
of losers appeared at the close. A
few "thin" Issues Jumped as much
as 6. Turnover of about 800,000
shares was a bottom since June 30.
Union Pacific Allied Chemical
touched peaks for 1947, as did Texas
Co. and Standard Oil (NJ) but the
latter two eventually slipped. In
front were Santa Fe, Norfolk A3
Western, Atlantic Coast Line, South
ern Railway, Great Northern Rail
way, American Car 4s Foundary, In
ternational Paper. J. C. Penney,
Douglas Aircraft and Caterpillar
Tractor.
Hesitant were Chrysler, Bethle-
hem, Goodyear, U. S. Rubber, Amer
ican Telephone. PubUdter indus
tries, Armour and Union Carbide.
Assorted railway bonds did better.
Cotton reached new seasonal highs
and, approaching the finish, was up
$2 to $3 a bale. At Chicago wheat
ended down to 2 cents a bushel,
corn up 1 to 3c and oats ?i to lHc.
