Eighih-lnning Rally Snares Game
Yesterday's Recreation field base
ball gam waa one of those now you
re ft, now you don't affairs, but
the Klamath Bona were two runs
ahead of Medtord when the scrap
ended. Score was 10-1 as tne Kiam
athltea stayed atop the Northern
California league and vanquished
their hottest rivals.
The came see -sawed along on

sixth frame when the Craters put
on a five-run outburst that nearly
tucked the win away. The Sons
also got their principal runs In a
chunk four In the eighth.
. Ftan Miller started on the hill
for Klamath, but was replaced
i during the blr Medford rally by
! Bert Krohn. Southpaw Krohn was
the winner, Jerry Nelson the loser.
Medford scored twice In the first
Inning on a couple of singles, two
base-swipes by Chuck DeAutremont
and a fielder's choice ground ball,
but the Sons also scored one run
in the first. Tug Tognoll singled
- and Bart Oolbar doubled.
In the second the score was tied
when HI Hatfield doubled to cen
ter, went to third on Miller's sin
gle and scored when Harold Mohler
muffed a grounder.
. Th Rnns went into the lead In
the third with the same crew doing
the damage. Tognoll walked, was
forced out by Ernie Bishop, and
Bishop scored wnen nauiera suuuui'
ed a long triple to left.
Medford tied it up again in the
fourth when Ralph Mohler hit s
fluke double past third, moved
up on a passed ball and scored
' on an infield out. In the fifth
frame Miller began to waver. He
gave out three passes and hit a
batsman, but was helped out of

The sixth was the Craters' big
one. Nelson was hit by MiUer. Paw-

as Earl Brooks let DeAutremont's
bouncer get through. Boyd Lucich
hit to right to score Fawcett and
MiUer was taken off the mound.
He went to right field and Krohn
started pitching with the score 5-5.
The first man to face Krohn.
Haddock, walked, loading the bags.
Haddock came to the place and
walked five times during the game.
Bob Harkins and Ralph Mohler hit
quick singles, chasing across three
. more runs and Krohn was In a
very bad spot before the rally ended.
In the seventh the Sons pecked
awav again for a run. Bishop and
Hatfield singled. Bishop stole third
and scored when Catcher Mohler
threw wild trying to nip Hatfield
off first.
Jerrv Nelson took a shelling in
the Klamath half of the eichth.
and Ted Brrgold had to finish
for him. Miller started with a
single and scored on Brooks' dou
ble. Brooks took third on the
throw in and scored on Pisan's
1 grounder. The shortstop's throw
to catch Pisan was low and Mario
raced to second. The score was
tied, 8-8.
Tognoll then slapped the lay's
longest hit to the centerf leld score
board, scoring Pisan. and having to
hold up at second with a ground
rule double. Bergold replaced Nel
son, and Bart Golbar greeted him
with a double to center which put
Tognoll across for the final run.

Fourteen straight New York Yankee wins have turned the American
league "race" into a shambles. Just
Sox ran away from the pack, the
eliminating one another that the
Manager Bucky Harris doesn't like that sort of talk, for he is fully
aware of the misfortunes Into which his Yanks can run. Other, and
perhaps better, teams have blown longer leads at much later dates.
Detroit, the early season leader, now tenants the runner-up spot
because the tigers whipped Philadelphia twice while Boston dropped
a pair to Cleveland. Ten games and a half Is not an Impossible
handicap to overcome in mid-July but none of the other first division
teams appear capable of making a sustained drive.
Harris found himself fresh out of regular pitchers yesterday, so be
gambled and won with old Bobo Newsom, who was claimed on waivers

national league team.
Conatser, optioned by Detroit, was
runnerup for home run laurels in
the Texas league. In 1946, led the
circuit's center fielders in fielding
and stole 20 bases. He batted .280.

but tile Los Angeles Angels finally
appear to have hit their stride.
The Angels were a full five guinea

day after taking a five-to-two game
series win over Hollywood, capped
by a 8-7. 3-1 sweep of Sunday's
