are riding an eight-game winning
streak today and enjoy an eight
game margin over Detroit and Bos
ton In the American league Hag
chase but don't mention "world
series" to Manager Bucky Harris.
Harris, with fingers crossed be
hind his back, won't say the Yanks
are "In" until he knows for sure that
the clubs behind him are playing for
the second place marbles only.
As both leagues recessed for the
next three days, because of the all
Star game Tuesday lu Chicago,
Bucky's Yanks were the talk of the
baseball world.
Joe Page and Allie Reynolds came
through with some fine pitching
yesterday as the Yanks pleased a
throng of 51557 home fans by de
feating Connie Mack's pesky Phila
delphia Athletics in both ends of a
double-header, 8-9 and 9-2. i
While the Yanks are moving
serenely along in the American
league, the National league dog
tight finds the Brooklyn Dodren
on top today with the Boston
Brave second by a game and the
New York Giant third, one-and-
one-bai.' games away.
The Dodgers took the lead away
from the Braves by beating them,
4-0 behind the three-hit pitching of
Ralpn Branca at Ebbets field.
Thi Giants failed to connect for
a homer for the first time in their
last 17 games but they took the
measure of the Phils. 4-3 in a single
encounter at Philadelphia.
Larry J arisen limited the Phils to
seven safeties, including a round
tripper by Del Ennis, in gaining his
seventh win.
Detroit and Boston both won
double-headers to remain virtually
tied for second place in the Ameri
can league. The Tigers are one per
centage point ahead of the Sox.
The Tigers defeated the Browns,
10-3 and 8-4 In St. Louis while the
Sox trounced the Washington Sena
tors, 7-4 and 10-1 in Boston.
Two four-baggers by Pat Mullin
and one each by Dick Wakefield and
Roy Cullenbine featured the Tigers'
first game win. Cullenbine starred
in the nightcap, hitting a homer in
the seventh and singling home two
runs during a five-run ninth inning
rally that won the game.
The Chicago White Sox split a
bargain bill with the visiting Cleve
land Indians, winning the opener.

UP Olle Tandberg of Sweden up
set Joe Baksl, Kulpmont. Pa.,
heavyweight by gaining a split 10
round decision and earned tenta
tively, at least a shot at Heavy
weight Champ Joe Louis' crown in
New York next September.
Before the fight the odds were
three to one on Baksl. but two
of the three fight Judges voted for
Tandberg and the other voted for
a draw. The 208-pound Tandberg
cut Baksl over the eye in the
second round and bloodied his nose

' The verdict gave Sweden Its first
heavyweight title contender in
modern boxing history. Both Tand
berg and Baksl had signed con
tracts to meet Louis in the event
of, a win.
However, in Chicago, when in
formed of Tandberg's victory over
the Pennsylvania coal miner. Louis
guffawed loudly and said "it looks
like I won't fight anybody this year."
Louis said that he wasn't in
favor of meeting the virtually un
known Swede, but that the Sep

ing high with a handsome three
game lead in the Pacific Coast
league today.
, The Angels got "way up thar'' by
taking two out of three from their
nearest rivals, Snn Francisco, over
the week-end. The A.igels won the
elongated series, f ve games to three.
Stellar southpaw Cliff Chambers
clinched the series by besting the
Seals' ace. righthander Bob Chesnes,
3-2, as Bob Joyce edged Red Adams
ai d Dor Osoorn.
Chambers, who fanned six in
notching his third win in four
starts against San Francisco,
drove In Uie deciding run, sin
gling home his batterymate Kd
die Malone after the catcher had
tripled with two on In the second
Inning. That was all the scoring
