First Telescopic Viewing
ODeratora of astronomical tele

dissatisfaction from those who for
the first time view the heavenly
bodies through such instruments.

clear, the mbon looks no larger than

the stars. They are still Just little
dots of light" One woman said that
the moon through one of the huge
Ml Wilson reflectors was a terrible
disappointment. "It Just wasn't mag
nified the least bit!"
A little experience changes the ob
server's opinion entirely. The more
he uses a telescope, the more en
thusiastic he- becomes. The operator
who is concerned with the reputa
tion of his glass will try to arrange
devices for showing that it actually
does magnify.
Probably the reason many feel the
moon is not enlarged is that it seems
so near right In the tube of the
telescope. A nearby object subtend
ing the same angle as the one out
on the sky is unconsciously con
sidered of little size. If this image is
projected against the sky, the dif
ference is seen.
When the moon is being shown
through the larger Instruments at
the Evergreen observatory at Eu
gene, a small telescope, two Inches
in diameter and 30 Inches long, is
also In use Just to show that magni
fication does take place. Each guest
Is asked to look through the tele
scope with one eye and along the
outside of the tube with the other.
He simultaneously sees two moons
against the sky. one magnified and
the other not. He then easily per
ceives that the magnified image ap
pears about 20 times wider than the
other. A large telescope cannot so
easily be used for this as the width
of the tube blocks the view of the
moon from the "outside" eye.
Saturn and Jupiter when viewed
with only moderate powers appear
fully as large as the naked-eye moon.
This is easily shown when the moon
is not far from the planet. The
planet is viewed through the instru
ment with one eye while the "out
side" eye looks at the moon. This
proof greatly surprises most guests.
That a sky object considered nearby
seems small is shown by the fact
that a disc held at arm's length
completely hides the full moon.
Real stars are so inconceivably dis-
jtant that no telescope makes them
appear larger. But they do seem Im
mensely brighter. Tens or thousands
of stellar points entirely Invisible
without optical aid are brought Into
view. If a star is double, the magni
fication of the glass will spread the
two farther apart, although each
Individual star remains a point of
light.
Good teleso)es reveal celestial
glories so numerous as to dcly at
tempted descriptions.
