The trophies will be passed out
later, but yesterday O. H. Buffing
ton presented Mrs. Nerseth and

Sammy Snead
CHICAGO. June 28 UP) A par
wrecking field still was chasing red
hot Sammy Snead in the $15,900
Chicago Victory National golf tour
ney which moved into the semi
final round today with an all-Virginia
title showdown brewing.
Snead, 35-year-old unpredictable
shooter from Hot Springs, Va., en
tered the third 18-hole round with
a 36-hole coun'. of 130, a whopping
12 under par the three strokes
ahead of another Virginian, 24-year-old
George Payton from
Hampton. In the third place was
Ben Hogan, the Hershey, Pa, hot
shot," whose 134 was only four
strokes off Snead's pace.
Bill Frink again hurled his team,
the Oak Street Tankers of Ashland,
to a $-2 victory over the Four Star
Merchants, present leaders of the
city Softball league, last night. In
the other games of the evening the
VFW held their third place position
with a 13-0 win over the Moose, the
KC outfit edged the Eagles, 4-2, and
the Bureau of Reclamation won their
first game of the season with a
22-11 win over the Elks.
Frink allowed just two hits and
one walk In the feature game of the
evening which, despite the cold, ap
proximately 150 spectators gathered
to watch. The Merchants were hit
less until Buck Ferguson squared
away on a fast ball In the fifth and
slammed ou,t a center field home run.
Then, In the sixth Inning, Roy
Harris, poled out a double and later
scored giving the Merchants their
two runs.
The Merchants threatened again
In the sixth Inning when Frink
walked Everett Buck, and Virgil
Horn made first on an error, ad
vancing Buck to third. Frink, how
ever, bore down and retired the side
beside the locals could score.
Wilbur Welch chucked a one-hit
Ult for the VFW, while his team
mates teed off on the Moose and
brought In 13 tallies. Three runs In
the fifth Inning gave the KC their
advantage over the rejuvenated
Eagles squad.
Louie Toucher was the winning
pitcher and Ramos hurled for the
Eagles. Zimmerman pitched the
Reclamation boys to their first win
of the season in a free scoring tilt
which Reclamation took from the
favored Elks aggregation. Brownie
Myers, regular Elks chucker. was
absent from the lineup.

Coming up to their sixth Northern
Camornia league Baseball game, tne

field tomorrow afternoon, and Uie
Indians are expected to field a bat'
tery of players who started Uie sea
son with the Sons and were then
cut adrift.
Jimmie West, southpaw pitcher,
and Jm Derrah, catcher, both went
to play for Yreka when they were
turned loose here, and both win
probably start the game for Uie
Indians.
For this game Uie Sons will be
skippered by Clyde Carlstrom. named
temporary manager, ana rraiuue
Miller, lefthander and Uie team's
leading pitcher and hitter, will prob
ablv start on Uie hill.
Actually, though this will be the
sixth game the Sons have played,
alUiough they are half way through
Uie schedule and meeting the In
dians for Uie second Ume. Two
ralned-out tilts make the difference.
In the opening game or the
season, down at Yreka, the Sons
lambasted the Indians 16 to 7,
but since that time Yreka has
eome to the front and Is now Ued
on mate aboard, with Uie aid of
ath at three wins to two losses.
Onlv last week Yreka beat Med
ford 7-6. while In Uie one league
game against Uie Craters Klamath
lost, 10-1. in lact, tne only aecision

innings of relief ball, giving up only

In the first match Eddie Dent

second George Mills takes on Jerry
Olson.
Each match will be two out of
three sets.
After the sinsles are run off a
semifinal doubles match may be
played, but up until today Uie full
slate of doubles quarterfinals had
not been completed.
Up to this point Uie tennis tour
ney has been on an Informal basis,
but coming down to Uie wire the
matches will be supervised by court
officials. The players are compet
ing for trophies now on display at
Matt Finnigan's sporting goods
store.

conference clash in their annual

Midwestemers favorites by a wide
margin in the postwar renewal of
Uie event last held In 1942.
On dopes ters' score sheets the
Big Nine wss an 89-43 point p re
meet favorite in the 16 events,
touted as a veritable preview of the
U. S. Olympic squad.
All Uie surprises were likely to
spring from the western ranks.

Though a few more shotguns and
rifles are being received, they are
being snatched up as soon as they
are brought out, and there are still
long waiting lists on most types of
guns, particularly deer rifles. Cer
tain types of firearms, notably deer
rifles and 12-gauge shotguns, will

in greater variety In most cases,

very scarce. The dealers also report
a crimping Improvement In shells,
and some of this Improved ammo Is
now available.
The expense and scarcity of lead
and some other basic raw ma
terials is blamed for the shell short
age but ammunition manufacturers
are hoping for a let-up before too
long. '
A local gunsmith reports that
Remington has developed a revolu
tionary bolt action, which they are
expected to Introduce in the near
future. The Remington company Is
also expected to come out with some
new calibers, although these de
velopments have not been made
public.
Limited supplies of ammunition
are reported by some local mer
chants for the 8-mm. German Mau
sers, which should be good news to
some local sportsmen who have Uiese
German rifles.
Ball Tryouts
Open Monday
All boys Interested In playing base
ballparticularly those high school
graduates between 17 and 23 years
of age are Invited to attend the
baseball school and tryout camp
which the New York Yanks will
conduct Monday through Thursday
at Recreation field.
The classes, taking up all phases
of the national sport, will run from
10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, with
Syl Johnson long -time major
leaguer, In overall charge.
Each young player attending Is
asked to bring his own gloves and
spikes. The school will furnish balls,
bats, pads and other necessary equip
ment. The school Is designed to give
every young fellow who wants to
play baseball a chance to be looked
over by big league scouts, and any
player who shows promise may be
ottered a contract with the Yankee
baseball farm system.
Tryout camps similar to Uits have
sent many of today's diamond stars
to the majors, notably Stnn Muslal
of the Cards, Eddie Miller of the
Reds and Pete Reiser of Uie Dodgers.
