Hnrll, the governor announced to
day. July 8 falls on a Mnturday, so
the effect of ihn proclamation is
lo provide three-duy holiday on
the July 8 week-end.
The proclamation mean that
banks, courts and public offices
must bo closed July 6, but other
businesses may stay open.
The proclamation will have little
eflrcl on stale ottlrea. because
most of them close Saturdays, and
the rest operate with skeleton
crews.
The governor said there had
been widespread demand to make
July 8 a holiday.
"In order that the Fourth of
July may be fully observed and
celebrated this year, and because
of wevk-end vacation conven
ience for thousands of Oregonlans,
I shall declare Saturday. July 8th,
legal holiday In tills stale." the
governor wrote In a press state
ment. Many businesses are expected to
close July 6 as a result of the
proclamation.
