always wonder why people ever
i emigrate from here to New York.
I I did It myself ten yean ago, and
I still can't make up my mind
whether It was a good Idea.
For the advantage that living In
Manhattan once had over life In

Elder Quits
Medford Job
Robert "Bob" Elder. Jackson coun
ty Juvenile officer at Medford. this
week announced his resignation
from that post and told valley
friends he and Mrs. Elder plan a
month's vacation starting June 1,
but as yet they have no definite
plans for the future.
Elder is well-known here, having
served seven years as a police of fl
eer on the Klamath Falls force, a
. part of that tune as a Juvenile work
er attached to the department Elder
moved to Medford several years ago
. and was named a member of a sub
committee of the social science re
search council of the Pacific coast by
the University of Washington soon
after taking the juvenile post. He
was also state chairman of child
protection for the Parent-Teachers
association for two years. Elder was
. organiser of the Oregon Juvenile
- council, composed of ail Juvenile of
ficers and Juvenile Judges in Oregon,
was elected first president of the
group and now serve on the execu
tive committee. He is a past presi
dent of Medford chapter. Interna-
i tional Footprinters, and recently re
signed as secretary of the assoda-
' tlon.

hep-cats here are heading for a
music trap with famed symphony
Conductor Werner Janssen in the
role of the Pled Piper.
Janssen announced after con
ferring with Dr. Karl Ernst, super
intendent of music In Portland
schools, that the Portland sym
phony's pre-concert rehearsals
would be held In high schools and
the swing loving teen-agers then
could get a taste of the classics.
Special Saturday afternoon sym
phony programs at the Civic audi
torium will round out the plans for
music appreciation in the schools.
CE Group To Give
June Fourth
Play
MAUN Members of the Chris
tian Endeavor group will present a
play, "Little Miss Fortune," at the
Malln high school gym Wednesday,
June 4, at S p. m., with dress re
hearsal slated for Tuesday after
noon at 3 o'clock. Tickets are avail
able from any CE member. Sally
Smalley Is the chairman. Proceeds
will be used to furnish and decorate
the CE room In the church.

Its artistic, commercial and cultural
superiority over the other American
cities. That Is no longer true.
Here In the Midwest the leading
cities have their own symphony or
chestras. Their women's shops
carry Fifth avenue styles. The radio
programs, the movies, the mag
aslnes. the latest books all are as
available here as they are In New
York. And the people seem to have
more time to enjoy them.
Artists Slay Home
No longer must the struggling
artist sweat out his talent In a
metropolitan garret to win a name.
The "made In Greenwich Village''
label Isn't necessary now to sell a
picture out this way. The Midwest
artist can stay home and paint home
country scenes, because his neigh
bors have become art-conscious.
The same tiling Is even more
true to writers. Many of the best
don't go to New York for material;
they Just drop In occasionally to
sign contracts and do their writing
elsewhere. They spend the money,
elsewhere, too.
But the main falling oft In New
York life lies Hi the field of every
day creature comforts. Yearly It is
getting more crowded, more noisy,
more trouble to live In.
Out here you can have a lawn
and a flower bed. In Manhattan
you buy a flower pot and let It go
at that.
The automobile has been an In
strument of liberation to most of
the Hinterland. In New York it is
a nuisance. Insurance rates are
high, parking spare is all but non
existent, and a garage costs almost
as much by the month as a small
flat So most families don't buy
one.
This has tended to make- New
Yorkers more Insular. They have
much less first-hand knowledge of
America than the Midwest farmer
or city worker who puts his wife
and kids In the car and drives
2000 miles or more during a two
week vacation.
Richer and Fuller
Life is exnanding and breaking
old bonds In the midwest and
throughout the rest of the country
It is becoming rich and fuller. In
New York this isn't true In the same
manner. The slums clear very
slowly, life rides to the subways
grind, and the concrete wilderness
presses more heavily upon the
spirit There aren't enough green
and growing things around. Tenn
ers are shorter, service Is worse.
But It would be unfair to New
York to say It has nothing to com
pensate for the lost spaciousness of
living you leave behind when you
come to It from the American
heartland. There Is a throb and
pulse about Manhattan that, once
felt, you can never forget It Is a
sense of being part of the craiiest,
most wonderful, biggest and noisiest
sideshow u history.
Whether this feeling makes up
for all you give up when you go
there to stay is something I still
haven't figured out after ten years.

seemed a good buy and was purchased.
Then the nroorletor found the
motor was the one stolen earlier.
