What's the hardest thing to lubricate ?
S at .
3-
i
1. The went enemies of gren-ie nro heat, cold,
water and vibration. Consequently, one. of the
hardest thing- to lubricnto U an airplane. Until
recently, tho only answer was to use a number
of different jrreasc heat-resistant, cold-resistant,
water-resistant, etc. and lubricate
tho plane frequently.
2. Iven then, airlines hnd a high rcplncement
ports problem due to lubrication failure. Know
ing this, our Union Oil engineers resized there
would be an excellent market for a grease thnt
would lick tho problom. And since we were in
eom)elition, and wanted business, they set out
to find one.
3. The reul! was a strontium base grease we
named Sirona. Strona proved to be absolutely
insoluble in water. In its two grades it gave
maximum protection at any temperature f roiu
300F. to -40F. And it would lubricate 90 of
the parts on a transport plane a job which
formerly took 8 to 12 different greases. .
J PORT i&Mpi STARBOARD
4 In the tint service test made with Strom, a
leading airline lubricated each of its ships on
one side with Strona and on tho other side with
regular greases. During the 10-month test, the
SfroMrt-lubricnted Rides of their ships went
times as long between grease changes as the
other sides.
5 Furthermore, not one part lubricated with
Strona showed any sign of breakdown during
the entire 10 months the first time in the
line's history that this had happened. As a
result, that airline And several others are now
using Strona almost exclusively.
6 Naturolly we're happy about this new prod
uct But more important, we believe, are the
economic conditions that inspired its develop
ment. Under anything but the American system
of free, competitive enterprise we would never
have had the incentive to put the time and ef
fort we did behind Strona or behind the other
product research we're continuing to do today.
