Mayor Ed Ostc.xdorf at last night's
city council meeting.
Explaining that It was "only a
thought" at prenent, the mayor mid
that the county might rwt a build
ing on an adjacent block, thus plac
ing all governmental buildings here
lh one large civic center.
He added that the present city
hall lot could be sold, as he already
had a buyer for it.
The mayor said the plan had been
turning over In his mind for some
time, but did not urge that any
thing be done Immediately on It.
"It's something we might be think
ing about," he ventured.
A small land rush was In the
offing this week as the common
council decided to release for sale
the lot at Radcllffe and Division
which has been withheld for a long
time pending th wt'w of a new
fire station in Mills addition. Due
to the numerous requests received
by the city asking to buv the lot
when it Is released. It will be sold
by sealed bid. Bids will be opened
at council meetln? Mav 12.

ing inspector, criticised Carnini as

stated that the Sons were not liv
ing up to their agreement with the
city to build up Recreation park
firoperly in return for the use of
he park three days per week. He
slated specifically that the Sons
were usiug shoddy materials in
their construction, that no repairs
had been made to existing facilities
except for the rerooflng of the
grandstand, which he said was done
onlv at his ow.il insistence. The
matter was referred to the recrea
tion committee with the orders that
the work be carried out according
to the agreement.
City Hall Repair
With the coming of spring and
the warm weather. the usual sug
gestion that . something be done
about fixing-up the city hall was
made bv Councilman A. P. Con
drev. Condrev remarked particular
ly "at the roof, which had leaked
on htm several times when he first
attended council meeting last De
cember. Building Inspector Salsbery
was asked to look the roof over and
make an estimate of the cost of fix
ing it. .... .
He was also asked to affix hand
rails to the stairs in the building to
conform with the state law.
Two nroriceed imurovement units
came before the attention of the
council also. A,. P. flora. 2453 Apple
gate, arose at the meeting to rep
resent property owners- on Apple
gate between. Mildhell and Wash
burn way. He told the couiie l that
the property owners have collected
thau$150 for preliminary survey
of the street, but that there are two
lots on the street that have
promised to -nay and havent. He
asked the council What the other
property owiters.could do to see that
the owners of the vacant lots paid
their share or. tne paving- costs,
was- told bv; City; Attorney Henry
Darin that thes promise was not
binding as there was nothing In
Writing. He -added that there was
nothing the city could do to assure

"Frazier" a very unpopular man in
the neighborhood. The council ac
cepted the petition and moved that
the city engineer prepare for a pre
liminary survey.
It was alleged also that Frazier
had a sidewalk In front of his place
that was not only In a bad state of
disrepair, but even hazardous. The
council instructed the street com
mittee and the city engineer to in
vestigate and take any necessary
action.
Photo Permit Asked
Otis Leach of Portland arose In
the meeting to ask the council for
permission to take pictures of people
on the sidewalks. He explained that
his man would take pictures of
persons walking along the sidewalk.

chase a picture, he would send the
ticket and money In to the com
pany. He explained that his man
had worked for a short time last
Saturday until stopped by the po
lice for not having a hawker's li
cense, and pointed out that he had
not been required to have a license
in. either Bend or Salem. Besides,
he claimed, he was not selling any
thing on the street, only giving a
ticket for use at the option of the
individual. Councilman Paul O.
Landry asked the council if a hawk
er's license was required of every
sale made in the streets. "If I ask
a man to buy a car on the street, do

asked. He was told that he did.

ought to be gotten rid of. Byrnes
offer was accepted.
Thompson Named
The mayor announced the ap
pointment of Elton Thompson of
the First National bank to a seat
on the budget committee. It was
approved by the council.
Also the mayor said that he
wished to reappoint Vern Moore and
Orvllle Hamilton to their posts as
the city's members on the Joint city
county Jail committee. The former
two year term of the men will ex
pire shortly.
Nine of the city's parking meters
will be changed from one hour to
two hour meters according to a
motion of the council. It authorized
the exchange of nine meters now
registering only one hour for nine
meters which would register two
hours. The exchange will cost the
city $5 per meter.
The council also approved the re
quest of the Klaruaui Falls naval
electronics warfare company to
lease the former administration
building at the naval air station.
The lease had already passed the
approval of the airport committee.
Councilman Condrey recommend
ed that the unpaved portion of Di
vision street which was graded by
the city last week, be oiled to keep
down the dust. The recommenda
tion was accepted.
An ordinance providing for the
paving and improvement of 7th
street between Oak and Plum to
be known as Improvement unit
number 83 was passed by the coun
cil for a third and final leading last
night
