This comparison to the late ec
centric miser who piled up more
than a hundred tons of rubbish In
his Fttth avenue mansion Is the
most complimentary I have received,
Usually some anonymous co-worker
merely scrawls a peremptory de
mand: "Clean up this desk Immediately.
It Is driving me craay."
The thing that purales me Is why
anybody else cares If my desk looks
like Berlin rummage sale. Take
that cocoanut for example. At least
twice a day someone comes by and
asks, "When are you going to take
It home?"
Others want to know, "What are
you going to do with It?" Still
others suggest darkly, "Somebody
will steal tt from you. That's silly.
Police records never have listed a
cocoanut stolen In Rockefeller cen
ter. But If this campaign of nerves

nut on Ills desk drawer If there Is
room. It will be used to bash each
and every office wayfarer who
comes by and says:
"A cluttered up desk Is the sign
of a cluttered up mind."
For this machine age proverb Is
one of the major falsehoods of the
Industrial world with Its watchword
efficiency,
I think It Is more likely that "a
clean desk Is the sign of a fearful
mind." When people are worried,
nervous or afraid, they have to do
things with their hands. Bo they
tidy up their desks with busy fin
gers and put all their piuier prob
lems Into folders and hide them
away.
They then sit importantly at their

maintained throughout his long lite

anguish of an efficiency expert. Yet
no newspmtermiin with a passion for
office housekeeping has been able
to turn out phrases like the Kansas
word wlsnrd.
The best chefs don't necessarily
keep the cleanest kitchens. What
advantage is there In keeping a desk
top looking like a billiard table
minus the cue bull? The only real
excuse for cleaning off tlte litter Is
to make space for a man's feet so
he ran settle back In his chair tor
some real knotty thinking.
