Loses But
Stays Up
By The Associated Press
There were a lot of explosive (to-lnR-on
In the Pacific Coast league
lwit night, with the Hollywood Stare
netting off most of the spectacular
fireworks. a . .
Before the shooting ended both
the league leaders, Portland and
Ban Diego, lost a game but re
mained tied at the top: the cellar
dwellers. Seattle and Oakland, each
won but were still tied at the bot
tom; Los Angeles was alone in third
place and Sncraniento. San Fran
cisco and Hollywood were tied for
Sacramento was leading Holly
wood. 7 to 4. In the eighth Inning
when the Stars unset the Solons
with a seven-run blast on five hits,
four walks and a wild pitch to win.
11 to 8. There were S7 hits In the
slugging match. 15 for Sacramento
and 12 for Hollywood. Seven pitch
ers saw service.
In Portland the Los Angeles
Anrels performed a somewhat
similar operation on the Beavers.
Portland Pitcher Jake Mooty was
sailing alonr with a S to lead,
having yielded onlv one hit and a
walk, when In the seventh In
ning the Angels burst forth with
four rnns to win. 4 to 3.
twit RtAinhnrk singled for the
Angels, then Mooty walked three
men in a row to force In a run
after which singles by Lou Stringer
and Pinch Hitter Leon Treadway
off Relief Pitcher Ad Liska brought
In three more.
More unusual business occurred In
Seattle where the Ealnlers beat San
Francisco, S to a, as Seattle Pitcher
Dick Barrett was given a walk with
the bases loaded and two out in
the ninth inning to force In the
winning tally.
Oakland won a more normal ball
game from San Diego, S to 2. on the
seven -hit pitching of Rookie Jim
Arnold, 21, who forced the Padres
to scatter their blows. The Oaks,
on the other hand, landed on San
Diego's veteran hurler, Tom Seats,
for the winning runs.

No sooner had the legislature packed up and gone home than one
of the measures passed at the last session In Salem was attacked' and
threatened with a referendum. The measure Is senate bill 140, a fish
law which was Introduced by the senate conunitfee on fishing Industries
by request, presumably the request of commercial fishing industries..
The stale directors of the Oregon Wildlife Federation and Isaak
Walton league have decided to try to bring the new law to' rot
of the people by referendum and try to get It tossed out as Inimical
to sports fishing.
It can't be brought to a vote before the 1948 general election, and
the first step Is to get 18.000 signatures on a petition demanding that
the newly -okayed law be submitted to the people. There'll be plenty of
other things for us voters to be thinking about in '48. Including the
choice of a president, but If the various conservation outfits turn loose
on SB 140 like they did on the steelhead bill last fall, we can expect
a pretty lively campaign on that matter.
News Will Be Out This Week-End
Mel Carpenter, who will again manage the Klamath Sons baseball
team this year. Is expecting to have a much stronger aggregation this
year than last, and we'll see whether he's guessing right come Saturday
night and Sunday when the Sons play the Medford Craters, first over
there and then over here.
Last vear the Craters thumped
8 to S and 12 to 8. Now the Medfordltes are In the same loop with the
locals, and the two squads will get
