1. Bator a man can produce much, he has to
have "tools." A trucker can't haul very much
without a truck. A machinist can't make very
much without a lathe. A farmer can't (rrow
very much without land and equipment. A mer
chant can't sell, very much without a store.
2. So If a man sets out to earn a livinpr, he
either has to go into business for himself and
provide his own "tools" which takes money
or go to work for someone else who will pro
vide the "tools" for him. Every man who goes
to work at Union Oil, for example, has an
average of f-1-1,300 worth of "tools" put at his
disposal.
3. That Mooli oil wells, refineries, drilling
rigs, service stations, etc. enable him to pro
duce wor petroleum product than he could
manage on his own. And because ho is ahlo to
produce more, he is able to earn more. 20 years
ago, when each Union Oil employee had only
$19,500 worth of "tools," our avcrogo wa
was $163 per month.
4a Slnea than, "tools"-pcr-man have more
than doubled; production-per-man has gone up
47, our average wage is about $306 per
month, and the working day is considerably
shorter. Of course, the employee doesn't get
everything the Company teams. A real incen
tive must be' offered to the tool providers who
make this progress possible.
5e This compensation, or shareholders' profit,
averaged last year on the money invested
in the Company. And this is highly important.
For profit provides the Incentive to invest more
money in tools, so that people can increase their
production and increase their earnings.
6e Thaf why our American freo competitive
economy should always bo aimed at improving
this incentive for the investment of money in
"tools." For only in that way can production-per-man
and earniiriin-pcr-mnn continue to ha
far greater in this country than in any other
in the world.
