Hankus, who was coaxed out of "retirement" by Pittsburgh, lofted a
Hank Wyse pitch into the left field bleachers for his first National
league home run. ...
Curve ball pitching, the cunning National league variety, was sup
posed to cut down the American league castoff. They were going to
keep the ball low and outside, away from his power, but somebody
forgot to tell Hank.
"They throw curve balls in the American league, too," Oreenberg
remarked.

league clubs swing Into action to
night, weather permitting, as the
class B baseball circuit mores into
its 1947 season.
Opening bills place Tacoma at
Spokane, Bremerton at Yakima, Vic
toria at Wena tehee and Vancouver
at Salem.
While the remainder of the league
will watch the skies only for the
possibility of rain, Spokane fans at
least will have a heavenward In
terest regardless of the weather. The
Brooklyn-affiliated Indians open
their season with the city's mayor
stepping out of a helicopter to hurl
the first ball.
Similar festivities minus the
plane, are planned In the other
three parks.

In Eugene Relay Meet
Forty-one cinder teams 16 from
class A high schools, 17 from class
B and eight from class C will take
part in the 'annual Haywaxd relays
track meet at the University of
Oregon this afternoon and tomor
row. Last-minute entries may bring
the total to 60.
The Klamath Union high school
Pelicans are competing in class A
today, and the Henley Hornets are
in class C tomorrow. Twenty-three
Pels will take part as will eight
tracks ters from Henley.
Coach BUI Bowerman's Medford
Black Tornado cindermen will be
on hand to defend the class A
championship they garnered last
year by nosing out the Grant Gen
erals by a hair. The Klamath
squad placed third last year, and In
that meet took first in high Jump,

league heap today but the rest of the first division was somewhat
scrambled.
Sacramento's hard-hitting Bolons sluitged their way Into second
place Inst night with an 11-7 win over the luckless Oakland Acorns.
Meanwhile, Portlands bounding Beavers jumped a couple of notches
to third by edging San Francisco, 6-5. The defeat dropped the 8enls
to a fourth-place tie with Los Angeles, which was rallied out at Seattle.

tions are now being sent to the
countries of the world, with the ex
ception of Russia, Germany and
Japan, to participate In the 1948
Olympics, the British organizing
committee for the'games announced
today.
Russia has applied for affiliation
to various International sporting
bodies, and when favorable consid
eration has been given to these ap
plications she will be In a position
to form a national Olympic com
mittee. It is this body In each
country which technically receives
an Invitation, the British commit
tee said.

giving a tremendous exhibition of
power but with neither over coming
close to a fall.
So Billy Weldner retains the Pa

challenger.
Both men, muscular and powerful,
broke every hold In a display of
strength and clean wrestling,
although Weldner had Duaelle on
his shoulders preparatory to a spin
when the final gong sounded.
It might not have done any good,
however, because once before In tlie
fifth round Weldner had applied his
spin and then found himself unable
to put the clinging Dusetle down.
Oeorges was having Just as much
success with Ills pel clutch, the full
nelson. Weldner flexed his muscles
and busted out of It several limes,
