Trespasses
On Timber
Land Up
An abnormal number of tim
ber trespasses are continuing to
occur on the O. C. and public
domain lands under the jurisdic
tion of the bureau of land man
agement in Jackson, Josephine
and Klamath counties, according
to E. K. Peterson, district for
ester. During the preceding six
months 15 new trespasses have
been discovered, involving 886,
000 board feet of timber with
on appraised single value of
$5443.95. All cases are being
settled on the basts of double
or triple stumpage. In trespass
cases not reported by the tres
passer, where he has failed to
have the property lines clearly
indicated by a competent survey
or, triple stumpage is demanded
on the basis of gross negligence
or deliberate trespass. At pres
ent average O. & C. stumpage
prices in southern Oregon, triple
stumpage amounts to $28.00 per
thousand board feet. In the
vent settlement cannot be made
with the trespassor, the mill
which receives the logs stolen
from government lands is liable.
Logging operators are again
urged to have all their property
lines accurately run before start
ing to fall timber. If a trespass
does occur, it should be reported
promptly to the O. & C. office
in Medford. If the operator does
not report the trespass, it will
be discovered sooner or later,
the persons responsible located,
and penalty payments required
on the basis of current stump
age prices at the time the tres
pass occurred.

Grants Pass, 285,000 board feet;
H. S. Tharp, Grants Pass. 168,
000 board feet; and J. J. Villair,
Cave Junction, 15,000 board feet.

company, Medford, 11.000 board
feet; Sanders Bros. Lumber com

Crayne Death
Told Here
Word of the death of Mrs. T.
E. Crayne, 69, 325 Michigan
avenue, on April 3 in Studley.
Kan., was received here this
past week-end. Mr. and Mrs.
Crayne had gone to Studley,
their former home for some 20
years, to spend the winter. They
had planned to return to Klam
ath Falls within a few days,
when Mrs. Crayne suffered a
stroke. She was visiting at (he
home of a daughter at the time of
her death.
Mrs. Crayne leaves to mourn
her passing her husband and the
following children, seven daugh
ters, Mrs. Mattie Karnes and
Mrs. Mildred Karnes of Studley,
Kan., Mrs. Mary Morgan, Burl
ington, Colo., Mrs. Wilma Mann,
Toppenish, Wash., Mrs. Nora
Ferguson, Mrs. Opal Dawes and
Mrs. Marguerite Perkins of
Klamath Falls, two sons, James
end Robert Crayne, also of this
city; 23 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren as well as
a host o relatives and friends.

Drive Starts To Furnish
Food For Europe's Babies
In response to the nationwide
aiiDcHl of the American Friends
Service committee, an outright
gift of one million packages of
baby foods for the hungry chil
dren of Europe was announced
today by H. J. Heinz 11, presi
dent of H. J. Heinz company.
Pittsburgh. At the same time
Hcing stated his company stands
ready to make a girt of addition
al millions of packages of baby
food by giving one package for
every package of Heinz baby
food purchased by mothers
throughout the United States
during the week beginning April
7 and ending April 12.
In making this announcement.
Heinz said. "There can be no
lasting peace while millions of
children in Europe go hungry.
America promised that with vic
tory would come food. This
promise was a messase of hotse
hope for a better tomorrow.
H. J. Heinz company realizes
that these millions of packages
will be but a small part of the
total amount of food needed: vet
no contribution is too small."

mated $1,267,000 on repair and
modernization work during
1947.
At least a third and probably
more than half of all dwellings
in the county will be improved
tliis year, according to estimates
released by the Tile Council of
America. "Increased supplies of
building materials and easing of

modernization throughout the
country," said F. B. Ortman,
chairman of the council's resi
dential construction committee.
