Two silvery Douglas transports
made long exploratory missions
far to the southwest of Little
America into Victoria Land to
day, seeking a clearer picture
of that area 01 mountains ana
high plateaus.
The two planes landed late
today after flights lasting 10
hours for one plane and 11 for
the other.
Meanwhile Rear Adm. Richard
Cruzen at McMurdo sound
planned to return to Little Amer
ica immediately.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 P
The air reserve training pro
gram at the Portland, Ore.,
army air base will be discon
tinued immediately.
The war department told Sen
ator Cordon (R-Ore.) that bud
getary limitations force it to
reduce the reserve air training
program from 70 to 41 detachments.

Army officers said today it ap
peared all but national guard
personnel would be transferred
from the Portland army air
base as the 'result of an air
force economy program. .
Orders have been received
to transfer all army planes to
McChord field. Civilian em
ployes are to be discharged.
Lt. Col. Justin C. Gunnison,
base commander, said he had
been transferred to San Fran
cisco. Orders are expected to
transfer other officers and men.
The national guard, which
has 16 P-51's, is not affected.

Cruzen said he might start to
night or early tomorrow for
Little America to be prepared
for immediate evacuation of the
base when weather and ice con
ditions demanded. The tempera
ture at Little America is 16 de
grees above zero.
Mountains and green ice-tilled
lakes were photographed in the
Victoria Land area on the last
flight from Little America on
Monday.
On that flight In the valleys
between the mountains crewmen
sighted frozen lakes of a deep
green color, possioiy caused oy
algae. The flight was then con
tinued over Mt. Erebus, an inter
mittent volcano.
High winds buffeted the east
ern task group steaming around

Horn seeking a chance to explore
the Weddell sea area. There has
always been speculation whether
the Weddell cuts clear through
the Antarctic continent making
it two land masses instead of
one. The western task group
still in the vicinity of the Knox
coast, scene of the Lake Oasis,
was prevented from flying by
the heavy swells.
The icebreaker Northwind re
ported she was making 10 knots
towing the crippled transport
Merrick and expected to arrive
at Dunedin, New Zealand, Satur
day.
The number of veterans claim,
ng veterans administration re
adjustment allowances for un
employment decreased further
in November to continue the
pronounced downward trend
since August.

Girl Re-Enlists
In Navy Reserve
Sylvia Mosio,. 628 Oak, was
sworn in to the U. S. navy re
serve Waves Saturday, February
15. She is the first Wave re-en-listee
in Klamath county.
Miss Mosio's home is in St.
Paul. Minn., she came to Klam
ath Falls in November, 1946, and
is teaching first grade at Shasta
school. She was enlisted in the
Waves in Cleveland, O., and
served 21 months before her dis
charge in March, 1946. Her rate
was storekeeper first class and

re-enlistment.

at KUHS, swore Miss Mosio into
the reserve.
