before he was 17 to become the
idol of New York's cloak-and-miters.
Now Lciner the name
became Leonard through the
mistake of an announcer is one

Benny Leonard, now crowding

seen in the nation's rings as a

at the outbreak of World War II
as a lieutenant, Leonard headed
its recreation and morale service
bureau, was discharged after
four years as a commander. He
was an army boxing instructor
in World War I.
Leonard married Jacqueline
Stern of California in 1934. and
the couple is as much a part of
New York as Times Square.

There's not enough snow at Ash
ton, so the community's Ameri
can dog derby sled races next
Saturday will be run on a new
site, 22 miles north ot here.
Almost every year since 1917
the race has been run, and only
once In 1920 was it cancelled
because of lack of snow. How
ever, in 1934 wheels were at
tached to the sleds because the
ground was bare.
This year A. R. (Bud) Cluusc,
president of the Ashlou Dog
Racing association, said a new
site was decided upon. Snow on
the ground there Is three and a
half feet deep, and the weuther
is cold enough to Indicate there
will be little melting before
time for the event.
A two-mile zig-zag course for
dog sled races and a quarter
mile straight track for cutter
and bob sled races will be built.
The derby will be ten miles
long, with the teams making
five laps on the two-mile course.
Everett Heseman, 1946 win
ner and victor four times, will
seek the derby trophy once
more. Last year's runner-up,
Austin Neelcy of Teton, also will
run again.
