Blessed Event For Park
Dears Expected This Week

It may be a Valentine lor Mag
gie and Jiggs, Moore pari bears
who are anticipating a blessed
event, probably the last of this
week. Both were In retirement
Sunday and made no comment
on the prospect, although B. F.
Slott, park caretaker, says they
have not hibernated this winter.
This will be the second arrival
for the two bears, who are
brother and sister. Their first,
born soon after they were
brought to the park in 1934, was
liberated in nearby mountains
when he was a coming two-year-old.
At that time it became evi
dent he no longer was welcome
as a member of the household.
Maggie and Jiggs have a bit of
history behind them. They were
captured by a forest ranger in
the McKenzie pass country In
1931, and later became the
property of D. E. Alexander,
Klamath county stockman.
Since there was doubt about
their biological status the two
were called Amos and Andy.
Later Andy became Annie.
Thev had built for them at
Tomahawk tavern on the west
side of Upper Klamath lake a
modern concrete and log home
with running water and wire
enclosed pen. They ate good
food, greeted visitors who fed
them taffv and other tidbits with
bearlike affability and gamboled
like kittens to amuse them
selves. Annie had one taste of the big
outside world when she escaped
from her pen to make "hash" of
the caretaker's home. The build
ing was empty except for two
"young fry" of the Alexander
family napping in a bedroom.
Annie entered through a kitchen
door. Intrigued by the fireplace
she put the ashes carefully about
the living room. The children,
hearing "first a high note and
then a low note," peeped from a
door to see her trying out her
octaves from the piano bench.
Mending baskets got in her way.
She tried the springs in the
davenport. The bed wasn't made
to suit her and she overhauled
that with no little damage to
blankets and the mattress.
Before she was discovered she
had found her image in a dress
ing table mirror and from the
telltale evidence she liked what
she saw.
When the tavern closed, Amos
and Annie went lo Moore park,
via farm truck, to become Mag
gie and Jiggs.
Their life there is devoted to
their admiring public. Jiggs has
learned to scatter too many on
lookers with a quick splash in
the stream where they drink and
bathe but beyond this occasional
interlude they Just eat and
drowse.
CAFE OWNER SUES
POLICE OFFICERS
PORTLAND. Feb, 13 Ml
Conrad A. Johnson, a Portland
cafe owner, sued eight police
men for $70,000 damages today,
declaring they disrupted his
business because of a personal
grudge against him.
Johnson asserted that for
three days . in September the
men drove police cars over the
sidewalk before his cafe, Jostled
patrons, and told customers "to
slay out of the joint."
