' That's a disservice to the bar
and the commission to ask me
to answer that question. It's
shameful and disgraceful to ask
a question like that to ask me

But Never Won A Title
NEW YORK, Feb. 6 (N E A ) Crowding 62, Harlem Tommy
Murphy Is little less lively and much more mischievous than
when he was the champion of near champions in the days of great
fighters.
There wasn't too much money around when Murphy was the
perfect club fighter In 130-odd mutches over a period of 12 years,
1903-14, Inclusive, but the lantern-Jawed Irishman got his share
of what there was and is comfortably fixed.
As proud as ever, Murphy goes to work daily as a main
tenance man In a Brooklyn 7
shipyard, Is an independent in
surance broker and during the
war taught boxing to trainees
at Fordham and New York uni
versity. He has a married
daughter, but Uvea alone as a
permanent guest at tne largest
of Brooklyn's hotels.
He still peppers unsuspecting
strangers with No. 0 bee bee
shot from between his teeth, at
which he has long been an
artist.
Murphy was rough and rug
ged. He could punch a bit, wus
hard to hurt, always crowding.
He never turned In a bad fight.
He sidled through the hemp for
only one purpose to win and
when he dldn l ne was trying
to the last.
Champions steered clear of
him until they lost their titles.
Willie Ritchie being the only
one to give mm a crack at a
crown. The chance came too
late. Murphy was only 29, but
broke in at 17, and the- pace
and competition took a lot out
of fighters in his day. He was
in the sere and yellow of nis
illustrious career when he lost
to Ritchie in 20 hard-fought
rounds In, San Francisco, April
17, 1914. He made just one
more fight, retired six months
later.
Ex-champions who felt the
thud of Murphy's fists were At

ern, Young Corbett, Harry Har
ris and Wolgast thrice. He
tackled such as Benny Yangcr,
Spike Robson three times, Mat

at 20 rounds as he was at six.

Lewis of Chicago, last of the
nation's most colorful and oldest
fight managers, was seriously 111
today in a Miami, Fla., hospital.
Stricken with a cerebral hem
orrhage, Lewis was paralyzed on
his right side and U he survives,
he probably will suffer some
permanent paralysis. At his ad
vanced ago he's considerably
older than 70 his chances of
recovery were considered doubt
ful by physicians.
Lewis' connection with the
prize ring dates back 50 years.
Forty years ago he steered "Kid"
Herman, a rough Chicago 133
pounder, into a world's light
weight championship match with
Joe Gans. in Tonopah, Nev. Her
man lasted eight rounds with the
ring master on January 1, 1907.
Lewis gave up the manage
ment of boxers In 1929 to be
come matchmaker for the newly
built $7,000,000 Chicago stadium.
He served in that capacity, and
also on the board of directors,
for six years. He matched Mickey
Walker and Tommy Loughran
for the stadium's opening bout
that drew $186,000, which stands
today as an indoor record.
Since 1937 Lewis handled the
affairs of Chicago's Leo Rodak,
a lightweight, who in his last
engagement last fall lost to John
Thomas In Los Angeles by a
technical fifth round knockout.
Lewis went to Miami about a
month ago. His health has been
poor since he suffered a heart
attack two years ago.
Lewis earned and spent a for
tune perhaps a couple of them
his greatest sport, next to box
ing, was horse racing.
