A spectacular fire destroyed the
$1,000,000 Centennial flouring
mill plant on Tacoma's water
front today, and threatened to
spread to the big Sperry flour
mill nearby.
Centennial's 225 employes left
the plant safely shortly after the
blaze started about 7:30 a. m.
Two hours later firemen gave
up hope of saving the plant, and
devoted efforts to keeping the
blaze from tho Sperry mill, sit
uated just north of Centennial.
Firemen said the blaze was
believed to have started when
a motor overheated and caused
an explosion in flour dust.
Smoke 'and flames rolled spec
tacularly skyward in the clear,
cold air, and a 12-mile wind
fanned the blaze.

said the Tacoma plant contained
about 400,000 bushels of wheat.
He said the million dollar plant,
built in 1907 and expanded sev
eral times since, was fully in
sured. Construction of a big con
crete addition was under way
at time of the fire.
All available fire fiKhting
equipment was called to the
scene but the city's only fire
boat broke down en route to the
blaze, hindering control efforts
from the water side.
The Centennial mill here was
the largest of several units op
erated by the company, and it
was one of Tacoma's largest in
dustries. Gilchrist Girl
Hurt In Accident
GILCHRIST Sharon Peachey,
Gilchrist eighth grade student,
was injured Sunday afternoon as
she was walking home along the
highway when a pickup driven
by Mr. Palmer of Chemult skid
ded, struck her. and threw her
into the gravel. Her left arm and
left side of her face were serious
ly cut. She was rushed to the
St. Charles hospital at Bend.
The doctors stated there is a
possibility of a skull fracture.
The latest report is that she is
resting better.

Yesterday radio speech class
heard lectures from two out
standing instructors In the line
of radio education. Mary Eliza
beth Gilmore, head of radio ed
ucation in Portland public
schools, and Jimmy Ross,
KOAC radio education director,
were the two sisters in RASP
class.
Sports Album, Jim Keunctt's
15-minutc broadcast, has a new
twist tonight with two different
prizes being awarded. An out-
of-town winner will have his
long-distance call paid for and
will receive a silver dollor as
his prize for the correct an
swer to the question asked. The
regular lu-town winner will re
ceive two ducats to a home

Die In Blaze

Three children burned to deuth
today when fire destroyed their
three-room home here, one after
successfully rescuing a brother
and sister.
The girl, 13-yearo-Id Delores
Otto, had carried two children
from the blazing structure, re
turned to remove more of her
brothers and sisters and was
found dead just inside the front
door.
Ako burned to death were
Victor Otto, 4, and Frances Otto.

in their beds. A Bellevue police
official said they apparently suffocated.
