Offset Asked
In Sales Tax
The flnul question askod from
the floor at tho end of a Klam
ath County chamber of com
merce sales tax forum at the
Wlllard hotel this afternoon put
a finger on tho anro spot of the
propoaed legislation, and was
unanswcrublo by the four speak
er who argued for and agulnst
tho sales tax proposal.
The question was: "What as
uranco it given that a state
aalea tax will lessen property
taxes?"
Since tho tax bill which tho
legislature Is expected to pul to
a vote of the peoplo haa not
been written, there was no
grounds for a direct answer, but
oth speakers In favor of tho
sales tnx Ed Geary, farmer,
and J. W, banders, real estate
man declared themselves In
favor of such a tux only If it pro
vided for a property offset.
C. D, Lung, representative of
orgunlzcd Inlior, and F. W. Win
seinan, business man, expressed
strong opposition to the tax in
any form.
Geary and Sunders pointed
out tliui thu stale was :iuw hard
pressed with demands for more
money, und thut tho recent elec
tions allowed tliul property own
ers cannot ufford further taxa
tion. A tales lux, with provision
to relievo tho properly lux bur
den, they agreed, wua a fair way
lo bring in the money and get
lax money from persons now
nut paying their share of the
state a expenses, Geary cited the
cxamplo of the great amount of
untaxed government land in
Klamutn county, saying thut the
people who live on such land
now do nut puy property taxes
but do enjoy the benefits paid
for by property owners.
C. D. Long aald that lubor
was aguitMl the aalea tux in any
form, even though a provision
lo exempt food might bo curried,
und that such a tax could only
lend to further labor trouble as
labor wua going to demand wage
increases to keep pace with the
rising coat of living.
Wluacman, a former resident
of California where a sales tax
is Imposed, brought figures to
show that even with the sales
tax property assessments In Cali
fornia have gone steadily up
ward. He also stressed thnt the tax
was a nuisance and worked a
further collecting and book
keeping liardthlp on the retail
businessman.'
Thia afternoon ballots are be
ing mailed to all members of the
chamber of commerce to allow
them to vote their stand on the
sales tax proposal. The result of
the poll. Chamber President
John Houston said, would be
