sona were being allowed to use
the zones and tnul when u truck
came to one to purk, It wua
usually filled by aomeono "hav
ing a cup of coffee." The mayor
answered that the. public villi
disapproved of loading zones,
and Sloun replied:
"The public Isn't even In
formed of their proper use nnd
need."
The mayor flnlulied by auying,
"Well, anyway 11 doesn't make
U'.iy (inference." Sloan ugrced
and suggested that they make a
new slurl on the subject,
Sloan stilted Unit all the
truckers wanted was some wuy
of loading and unloading In "the
quickest, easiest nnd most con
venient wuy" for nil concerned.
Hut, ho added, truckers must
have some wuy of getting In to
the eilores.
Chief Hamilton reminded the
group that all except three
blocks lu the meter area were
provided with alleys, nnd asked
why the trucks didn't loud in
these. He wns told Unit the alleys
were usually too congested, with
one truck having to wult us
much us 40 minutes for other
trucks to unload before they
could begin. He then nuked why
the trucks' dldn I deliver aomc
where ele and come back later.
Sloan explained that trucks
were loaded to conform with
certain routing nnd bad to be
unloaded In that order. It was
also brought out that many mer
chants have refused shipments
ut their back duors. forcing the
truckers to park In front to make
deliveries.
Muyor Ostcndorf asked the
truckers how many trucks were
In operation In the meter area
both before and after 11 a. m.
A census of the various repre
sentatives revealed that at least
30 trucks were operating before
that time. At his suggiwllnn that
the truckers get all their busi
ness In the area finished before
that time, it was pointed out that
most stores did not open before
9 a. m , that many trucks were
busy all during the day making
pick-ups from the stores for lo
cal delivery, and that If the
trucking companion were com
pelled to operate In the area in
such a short space of time, con
gestion would result.
The mayor told the group
that he would present Its prob
lem 'to the city council. The
truckers will be allowed to park
ut the curb In front of the stores
until 11:3(1 In the morning until
the matter la settled.
The truck parking question
was carefully avoided at cou v
cll meeting last night until
Councilman A. V. Condrcy asked
the mayor who had given him
the "authority lo permit even Ihe
temporary settlement of the con
troversy?" Condrcy stated that
lie wiu against the mayor's ac
tion and he didn't feel Hint the
truckers should be allowed any
special privileges.
"There. Is no reason," he sold,
"that truckers shouldn't be
made to obey tho meter ordi
nance just like anyone else." He
Htaled that he thought merchants
should open up before 9 a. m. to
permit all deliveries to be made
before that hour if necessary.
Tho mayor asked the council to
pass a motion favoring the tem
porary agreement he had
worked out with the truckers;
three of the council members
agreed, Condrcy gave the dis
senting "nay."
Condrcy also pointed out lo
the council thai two different
clauses pertaining to the main
tenance of the meters were in
the city's contract with the com
pnny. The first clause states that
the company will maintain me
ters at its own expense, the
other clausa allows the city the
option of taking 25 centi per
meter per month from the rev
enue for maintenance, Condrey
said inai uie in coma per meter
would net tho city (109 per
month for 607 meters, while the
city would have to pay a man
$2111 to service them.
The company'! service man
hero temporarily pointed out
that for the company to main
tulu the meters tho niBchlnes
would have to be taken from
the pouts, crated and shipped
back to Hartford, Conn., for re
pairs. During this time tho city
would be losing revenue from
meters and In tho long run It
would coat much more.
Condrcy stated that In any
cose the council should resolve
to adopt one clause or tho other.
It was decided that the council
would study the matter and take
action at tho next meeting.
Condrcy also asked the coun
cil to hnve the traffic safety
committee investigate the con
trol of traffic at the Intersection
of Spring aid S. 8th, and the
possibility of placing stop signs
on Oak where it Intorsects
