pie in the world today are Bob
Casey, one of those rare charac
ters who become a legend i:i
their own lifetime.
I say two people because if
you only know Bob Casey, the
writer, you've missed an equally
great man Bob Casey, giving
witli the voice,
Tlicy are wrapped up tosether
in one wonderful barrel-bodied
Irishman with the soul of a lep
rechaun who retired this week
from the Chicago Dally News
after thirty-seven golden years
in the newspaper vineyard.
At least I hope Robert Joseph
Casey looks back upon them as
golden years. Certainly he is the
working newspaperman's news
paperman of this generation, and
no man has done more to sell the
Joys of the trade to the men who
make their coffee and cupcakes
by reducing life to daily patterns
of printed ink.
Great modern editors such as
Carr Van Andu of the New York
Times and Oliver K. Bovar'd of
the St. Louis Post-Dispatch arc
responsible lor lifting the stand
ards of Journalism, but it is men
like Bob Casey that give it a
bright spirit and a soul.
To read his lively copy wm a
stimulus for every young re
porter to go behind the common
place and seek the real facts
with the flavor of living. The
great reporter brings back the
flavor as well as the fact.
Bob is an international jump
ing Jack who has filled in his
spare time between newspaper
chores by turning out more than
a score of books, tie absorbs
men, events and anecdotes by a
kind of Irish osmosis, and di
gests them into fluid prose.
He leaves a lasting ripple
wherever he goes, and when
newsmen meet in Saigon or
Cairo or Algiers or Paris, sooner
or later the qucjtion comes up,
"Where'd you see Bob Casey
last?"

February 8, 1047. for the furnishing of
all plant, labor and materials, and per
forming all work for the construction,
complete In place, of a Steel Water Tank,
90,000 gallons capacity, or alternate as
shown In the specifications, erected on
a steel tower too feet In height, from
the capstones to the bottom of capacity,
together with roof, ladders, riser column,
overflow, water level Indicator and all
other accessories specified.
The bid and other data submitted by
the bidder will form the basis for the
letting of and execution of a contract
for the work. Bids are to be submitted
In proper form as described in the
specifications They shall be placed In a
sealed envelope, plainly marked outside
"Bids for lha erection of an elevated
water tank," together with the date,
and addressed to the City Recorder,
and mailed or delivered In time to reach
the deaignated office on or before the
date above stated. The City Council
will thereafter without undue delay pro
ceed to open the bids and act upon them.
The City Council reserves the right to
reject any or all bids submitted.
Plans and specifications may he secured
