    Teacher Pay
Still Too Low
WASHINGTON. Jan. 23 P
An official of the National Edu
cation association said salary in
creases granted teachers during
1B48 "are being cancelled out
by the upward trend in prices,"
leaving their financial distress
as bad as ever.
Willard E. Givens. NEA execu
tive secretary, estimated in a
statement that the average sal
ary of teachers, principals and
supervisors for the' 1048-46
school year was about $2,000.
Saying it is too early to predict
what the 1946-47 average salary
will be, Given added:
"Unless the average has ad
vanced by $300 to $400, the
problem of recrultin and keen
ing teacherii will continue to
grow worse, as teachers' salaries
continue to drop in -purchasing
jower."
