    Migrator Birds ...
Waterfowl Census
Conducted Here
Br HALE SCARBHOUGH
a i,,,.vuii waterfowl rrajus has lust been comuleted here.
4k. iriir,o of tlio census-takers
U. S. fish and wildlife migratory bird lawa for 1947. but Jim
Savage, who is the game management agent here is not giving
out any information ai to the number of birds considered to be
here at present. ,
His figures will be sent to the services regional office In
Portland, then on to Chicago for final compilation, and It -may
be several months before the fish and wildlife service begins to
make an estimate of the duck
population after the 1946 shoot
ing season
Savase's area of count coV'
ers eight counties In northern
California and seven in souw
ern Oregon, and he has been
aided by state police, game war
dens and private individuals.
They don't mak. an actual
bird-for-bird count it would
have been impossible to ac
tually count the ducks on
Link river last we.k but
gath.r an .stimat. as to how
many birds ar wh.r. dur
ing th. two-week period, Sav
ag said.
The count is going on all
over the United States at the
same time, so when all we tig'
ii res are gotten together back
in Chicago the fish and wild'
life service can come up with
a total that in a fairly correct
way tells how many ducks and
geese there were arouna aur
ing the weeks of January.
Last year the service set its
estimate at 80 million birds. In
1944 the estimate was 125 mil
lion. The difference showed up
in the shorter hunting season
and bag limits.
The counters also divide
their estimates into species
honkers, cacklers, manaras.
etc.
These local bird counts in
themselves don't mean a thing
a far as numbers are con
cerned, Savage explains, but
when they're all gotten together
they make a picture of the mi
gratory bird population.
But th. population is Just
on. determining factor In th.
bird laws that com. out in
th. fall. To check on th.
' yearly crop of n.w birds, th.
fish and wildlif. scrvic. hold's
a spring count in th. Canadi
an pothol. breeding grounds
and that bwomn another fac
tor. W.ather is another, num
ber of hunter is another.
. The count here is over ex
cept for Savage's job of getting
his figures from such spots as
Tulelake, Coos Bay and Eu
reka together and transmitting
the data to the Portland office.
The Portland headquarters cov
ers six states for the fish, and
wildlife service.
Team Match
Paces Card
It'll be the meanies against
the cleanies again tonight in the
armory squared-circle when two
opposing teams square off in the
main event tag match.
. Buck Lipscomb and Tony Ross
will be in one corner, Billy
Weidner and Billy Fox in the
other, and with .that lineup the
railbirds should see a fast, action-packed
display of fireworks.
Fox and Weidner, particularly
Weidner, hold the most recent
win in a match of this type, over
Lipscomb ' and Sammie Cohen
last week, but Tony Ross is an
old hand at the business and
will be reckoned for before the
night is over.
The tag match is not time
limited, and will go until one
team accomplishes two out of
three falls.
. In the opener, starting at ap
proximately 8:30, little Billy
Goelz will tangle with Bulldog
Jackson over the six -round
route.

of the Victory league, out
classed the Gun store quint in
all departments of the game to
.win 38 to 17 on the Fairview

points for the winners and Jim
Flora seven for the losers.
Binkley's retained a margin
of about 2-1 all through the con
test. The other game last night was
-entirely different. The Grease
Monkeys topped T and I of the
National circuit 27 to 25. after
having trailed for three periods.
-jrea tuner counted 15 points in
that tilt, Elwood Rose 10.

From Golf Trail
PHOENIX, Ariz.. Jan. 23 (IP)
Officials of the Professional
Golfers association announced
early today that Dick Metz of
Arkansas City, Kas., has been
suspended from competing in the
next two PGA-sponsored gou
tournaments.
The disciplinary action came
as the aftermath of an incident at
Carmel. Calif., two weeks ago
in which, it was charged, Metz
struck Fred J. Corcoran, PGA
tournament bureau manager.
The suspension was voted by a
newly-formed PGA tournament
players committee headed by
George Schneiter of Ogden,
Utah. The committee found Metz
guilty of violating PGA's code of

Landing Plane On Sandbar
Ducks Drift In Is Laiy Man's
By HILMON PINEGAR
MEMPHIS. Jan. 23 (NEA)
No getting up before day
break and shivering in the
blinds until sun-up when Joe
Bowen goes duck hunting.
Instead of getting planted and
waiting for the ducks to come
to him, Bowen finds the ducks
and goes to them.
A beautiful feature of Bow
en's system Is that he seldom
has to walk more than a few
hundred feet, rarely ever gets
his feet muddy. "You can wear
the clothes you've got on with
out getting messed up," he
promised.
Before I could say no, Bowen
had donned his hunting cap.
slung some decoys over his
shoulder, picked up his trusty
.410 shotgun, headed for his
shiny two-place plane o n t h e
flight line of the West Memphis,
Ark. airport he operates.
Th. .ngin. was warmed up
bri.tly. and w. w.r. off
winging our way up th. Mis
sissippi riv.r.
A i.w mil abov Memphis,
w. saw thousands ot ducks
swimming and waddling
around on sandbars.
A little farther up, Bowen
pointed out a smooth strip of
sand, and said: 'That's where
we're going in."
U. - tUa 114.1a nlsn. rlrturn
put on the parking breaks, tied
the ship down, began unloading
his paraphernalia. I he ducKs
leery of such goings on. swarm
ed into the air and sailed away
I thought our expedition would
be a f loo because of this.
' Don t worry, he said, as he
set about building a blind of
driftwood and grass. "There will
be more along in a few minutes.
Ducks are moving down the
river. It may sound funny but
when a bunch of them leave a
place a new bunch will nearly
always come in."
Blind completed, decoys out,
we got under cover.
In a matter of minutes we
spotted a lone mallard hen com
ing down the river rapidly.
When she saw the decoys and
began circling to look the place
over, Joe began quacking the
old drake's "Whatcha doln' to
nite. Babe?" on his duck-caller.
The hen plopped right in
among the decoys. Before she
discovered that she had been
duped, Joe stuck his head
through the front of the blind.
and shouted "Shoo!"
As the hen took to the air un
der full emergency horsepower,
Joe let go with a volley. The
duck shivered f o r an instant,
spun in.
Don t even have to wade out
to- get the duck," said Bowen.
It will drift to the bank with
the wind.
This is not as easy as it
seems, however, for sandbars
are tricky and dangerous. No
one but an experienced pilot
should try to land on a bar, and
then only after he has carefully
checked the firmness of the
ground. I came up here by boat
and walked over every foot of
this bar before I tried to land
on it.
"While taxiing into position
for a takeoff the other day, the
plane rolled into a soft spot,
mired up over the wheels. If
that had happened to someone
while coming in for a landing,
the plane would have flopped
over on its back, and someone
might have got hurt."
But Joe Bowen certainly has
the lazy man's way of hunting
ducks.

The organizations said they
found that Oregon's game law
enforcement ranks well with
other states, with 95 per cent
of all game violators being con

Game law enforcement offi

time to game law enforcement,

State police salaries should

There should be more cooper

The game fund should be re
