SALEM, Jan. 17 VP) A far-
reaching program for reorgan
izing aeveral state department!
and to bring most self-sustaining
agencies under legislative con
trol was under way today as the
legislature went home lor the
wfkend.
Five bills were being drafted
to make the changes. They

Father Of Klamath
Woman Passes
Godfrey Beck, 83, died Jan
uary 11, at his home on The
Dalles route near Salem, fol
lowing an illness of three years.
He was the father of Mrs.
Johanna Nairn of Klamath Falls.
Mr. Beck had lived in the Salem
district for the past 39 years,
but old timers remember him
here. He was married in this
city in 1897 to Theresa Bauer
who survives him. Mr. Beck
was born in Wurtemburg, Ger
many, April 24, 1853.
Final rites were held In Salem
Tuesday with burial in the IOOF
cemetery.

ing state activities in the general
fund, exempting the state high
way, unemployment compensa
tion and industrial accident
funds.

missioner, abolishing the present
three-man tax commission.
Combine the state banking and
corporation departments.
Transfer the state inheritance
tax division from the state
treasurer to the state tax com
mission. All of the proposals are ex
pected to draw bitter opposition,
and the one setting up the de
partment of conservation will be
the hardest fought, since com
mercial f ishermen and sportsmen
each want to remain under
separate control.
Many state agencies, such as
the same commission and many
other boards and commissions,
now are almost independent of
leeislative control because they
finance their own activities by
fees they levy themselves. The
new proposal would make them
subiect to legislative appropria
tion and control. It also would
olace liauor revenues in the gen-
eral fund, and thus satisfy old
age pension groups which object
to living off liquor money.
Red Bluff To
Hold Beef Sale
Two renowned beef cattle ex
perts will grade and judge the
400 Hereford bulls which are
to be shown and sold at Red
Bluff on February 7 and 8 un
der the auspices of the Tehama
County Cattlemen's association.
These are Professor Harold
Guilbert, co-author of a new
University of California circu
lar on California Beef Produc
tion, and herdsman and live
stock judge, Alex McDonald of
the university farm at Davis.

This is like a fox asking one
rabbit how to catch another
rabbit.
It is also a bit insincere, be
cause let's face it, girls the
problem isn't so much how to
pick a husband as how to grab
one.
Nature operates under the
old economic law of supply and
demand, and, unfortunately for
the sex who in the old days
rode side-saddle, there are now
more women than there are
men.
So most of you gals who
want to team up in marriage
instead of punching a type
writer or . hurling adverbs at
somebody else's children well.
you just have to face the fact
