Rate Drops
PORTLAND, Dec. 26 (P)
Prosperity was general In Ore
gon this year, Estes Snedeeor,
chief of the federal bankruptcy
office for the state, reported to
day in listing only 213 bank
ruptcy petitions for the year to
December 24.
This was the smallest num
ber for any year since a uni
form system was established in
1898, he said, and was 100 few
er than 1945, the previous low
year. The total is about 800 un
der the yearly average, he said.
High point was reached the
first year of the depression
when 1500 were listed.
Snedeeor said, however, that
in recent months a trend sug
gests that in lines such as jew
elry, night clubs and beer par
lors an increase in bankruptcies

000,000,000 for goods and serv
ices this year, or an overage of
more than $900 for every man,
woman and child in the country.
The commerce department's
office of business economics
which came up with this esti
mate today said the total is $21,
000,000,000 over last year's pre
vious record.

Toll Reaches 220

More than one-fourth of the
traffic deaths 61 occurred in
California. The heavy toll in
highway accidents was blamed
by a police traffic official on a
"combination of wet streets and
drinking." Forty-three of the 61
deaths were reported In a 10-
county area near Los Angeles.
Rain and fog were reported in
the area.
Illinois' violent death toll
ranked second with 27, including
22 in traffic mishaps. Nineteen
of the fatalities occurred in the
Chicago area.
The heaviest single toll on the
holiday was the death of five
persons in a head-on auto colli
sion near Norristown, Tenn.

A second Christmas Eve acci

Powell has head, leg and acute
back injuries, Mrs. Springer has
a badly bruised heud, Elmer
Nichols has body Injuries, and
his wife, 47, music teacher at
the Bonanza grade school, was
badly bruised. Officers said the
highway was slick with ice but
that two signs, a "stop" and a
railroad sign, are at that cross
ing. Hospital attendants reported
numerous accident victims treat
ed for minor cuts and bruises
Christmas Eve but that they
were dismissed after treatment.
Passengers Hurt
Christmas Day saw several
traffic accidents which hospital
ized passengers. At 9 o'clock
yesterday morning state police
were called out on the Ashland
highway to investigate a two-car
crash which sent two to Hillside.
The accident occurred near the
McVcy machine shop when of
ficers said a car driven by
George W. Hill, 41, route 3 box
1052, started to pass a machine
operated by Walter Bernard
Mulligan, 41, 17S0 Hope, the
Hill car skidding on the ice and
striking Mulligan's car which
overturned in the borrow pit.
Hill was uninjured, but Mrs.
Velma Mulligan, 38, and her
mother, Mrs. S. H. (Anna) Rose
myer, 70, were taken to Hillside.
Mrs. Mulligan was to be dis
missed today, Thursday, but
Mrs. Koscmyer has severe Injur
ies including head and chest
hurts and multiple bruises. Mul
ligan la a Kestcrson employe.
Late Christmas afternoon, at
about 4:15 o'clock, an accident
at Shasta way and Arthur street
injured two, not scrloutily.
State police said the driver of
one car. Glen Hart of 1610 Oak,
was going toward Klamath Falls
on Shasta way at about 40 to 45
miles per hour, when a sedan
pulled out in front of his car
and in attempting to avoid a
crash the Hart car overturned
twice and landed on its ton. Pas
sengers in the Hart car were Mr.
and Mrs. Orville Sampson, route

treated at Hillside. Hart was
uninjured.
State police were called out at
12:30 a. m. Christmas morninif
on highway 66, three miles west
of the Lenox junction, where a

the highway. Sessions posted
$100 bull to appear in justice
court at 2 p. m. today. Officers
said Session told them he was

of the machine. Walker said he

They refused to be hospitalized
and were given treatment by a
private physician who said
Rosle Jones' lower Up was near
ly severed and all had bad head
and face cuts.
Day, owner of the car, is em
ployed as car washer at Hau
ger's, Bray Is porter at Lombard
Motors. Mrs. Bray and Mrs. Day
are twin sisters. Mrs. Bragg,
passenger In the third car, Is suf
fering from severe shock.
In Hillside hospital is Mrs.
Edith Kirk. 24. Merrill, who has
head injuries received at 11 p.
m. Christmas Eve when a car in
which she was riding over
turned. The hospital said Roy
Ballingcr and Webb White, also
passengers, were treated. Mrs.
Kirk is employed by Schuck
brothers.
Tulelake police reported minor
accident but no injuries over
the holidays. Driver of a truck
crashed into the Associated ser
vice station across from the
Bank of America, snapped off
the water pipe and drove away.
Before authorities could shut off
the water Main and B streets
were flooded and ice formed
rapidly, creating a huzardous
condition at that point. Don Dy

truck driver was unknown. The
accident occurred Christmas
night.
All in all, state police reported
10 accidents Christmas Eve and
five Christmas Day, There were
a number of others of which
they were not advised, it is un
