Farm Labor
Sufficient
In Oregon
A Oregon farmer ready them
fives for the final lap of the
1 048 harvest, J. R. Beck, state
supervisor of the OSC extenlon
service emergency farm labor
program, report that labor has
not been a limiting factor in the
harvest thu far although a good
deal of shifting has been neces
sary by harvest followers to re
lieve temporary labor shortage.
The fact that the Pacific count
states pay the best farm wages
In the United State has been a
major factor In relieving the
wartime shortage of harvest
workers, Beck indicates. Figures
released by California check sta
tions recently Indicated that ap
proximately three timet the
number of persons were arriving
in that state now as compared
with the war years when the
defense plants were recruiting
workers from eastern states.
Washington and Oregon are!
bIxo getting an unprecedented i
influx of out-of-state workers
thi yeur. Many of these new
arrivals are working on farm
harvest Jobs, Beck states.
Housing is still a major attrac
tion for harvest followers. In
this respect, Beck saya, the mi
grant camps located in some of
the high labor requirement areas
are proving valuable in attract
ing larm help.
Library-book circulation In
Canada in five war years fell
from 10,225,813 to 9,120.203 for
adult fiction and from 3,997.336
to 3,726,994 for adult non-fiction
but rose from 3,707,948 to 6,
227,433 for children's books.

chance to resume training at a
later date.
Changes are permitted only
for good reasons, as the VA in
tends that the veteran should
