Trunk Blast
Kills Woman
In Portland
PORTLAND, Ore., July 20 (If)
A small trunk that detectives re
port the family of Jamci W.
Bowden had been warned not to
open wa the center of Investiga
tion today of an explosion that
blew Bowdcn's wife to bits while
the wai alone in her home,
Bowden was . at an Oregon
coast town where he keeps a fish
ing boat when the blast rocked
the home.
City Detective Bard Purcell
reported Bowden, charged with
illegal possession of explosives
and held without bail, has denied
owning explosives or any knowl
edge of how his wife was killed
Saturday night.
Purcell said the explosion is
believed to have originated in a
"foot locker" that Bowden'i two
daughters, Doris, 13, and Shirley,
17, told him was kept padlocked
in the cellar.
Both girls reported their father
repeatedly warned the family
not to tamper with the trunk or
try to open it, the detective said.
. The cellar of the Bowden resi
dence was wrecked by the ex-

the police criminal laboratory as
human. Chief of Detectives Eu
gene Ferguson declared last
night that particles of electric
-wire and metal dug from floor
rafters indicated some device
may have set off the explosive.
He said the odor of a common
type of explosive was present in
the cellar when police arrived
to investigate.
The detective said the
daughters reported their parents

Carl C. Donaugh, democratic
nominee for governor of Oregon,
opened his campaign in an ad

ocrats yesterday, charging the
republican administration of
Gov. Snell had failed to antici
pate postwar needs.
Donaugh declared industrial
payrolls in Multnomah county
dropped from $37,000,000 in
April, 1945 to $17,000,000 in
April, 1946 without evidence of
the state "leadership" in new in
dustrial development.
"The leadership of Oregon
proposes to sit idly by as our
neighbor states develop, in
crease their commerce and in
dustry, increase their popula
tion, increase meir payrolls and
tax base and make greater
progress than we," the demo
cratic nominee said.

Charles Howard is one of the
men in blue who drives a big
black car around the streets of
Klamath Falls, more simply, a
policeman. Mornings find Charlie
in the police car and quite often
he pinch hits at the desk ser
geant's Job. He has been with
the force about three and a half
years. Previously he was a meat
cutter, and can't quite under
stand how he came from that
job to one on the police force.
Charlie, his wife and two chil
dren live at 846 California. His
boy, Harold, 14, and girl, Mar
lene, 9, unlike most youngsters,
probably aren't dazzled by a po
lice uniform. The Howard fam
ily came here from Nebraska
some six years ago. The bane
of Charlie's existence right now
is that as an avid fisherman he's
been out only twice this season.

Two Corvallis residents were
killed and a Portlander fatally
injured in Sunday automobile
accidents.
Failure to negotiate a turn on
the Pacific highway a mile north
of Jefferson early yesterday,
overturned a car in which Albert
Flultt, 28, and Bonnl Charles
Williamson, 20, were riding.
Both were dead when state po
lice reached the car.

In a hospital within an hour after
a two-car collision on southeast
McLoughlin boulevard sent three
others to the hospital with criti
cal injuries
The Portland fatality was tha
28th for the year.
