to the doctors
the stay-nt-home
doctor who
didn't get to go to war but who
put In such supreme effort on
the home front. The work that
somo of them did and the length
of their working day was, In
many cases, almost Incredible.
You don't see how the human
system could havo stood up un
der such punishment. The physi
cian who was getting to the point
where ho could tuke It ensy a
llttlo, was, all at once, faced with
the plain fact that unless he got
going about seven In the morn
ing and stayed with It until ten
or eleven at night, people were
going to die. And he responded
to the need by forgetting his own
crying need for rest, and by
driving his overworked body and
mind and nerves mercilessly.
Probably he shortened his life
con.Hidcrnbly by the extra strain.
Ha knew he would. Hut he didn't
hesitate. He gave of himself to
the utmost of his strength and
ability. His number Is legion.
